The myth of the Power Trio has made many a young rocker bang their head in tribute throughout the years. Though there are many trios in many genres, the Power Trio is all about ROCK! I have been wanting to host a special on my favorite trios for quite some time, and I figured being holed up in quarantine is the perfect opportunity to throw down.

And of course I wasn’t able to fit in everyone I wanted in these two short hours. This is a taste. A tease. My name is Hell, after all.

So pull out those air guitars, basses and drums, let your hair down (or put on a wig if you need to), and let’s get rockin’ for the next two hours!

Enjoy.

Another week another show from my bed. It’s a great bed, really. I can’t say enough good things about the comfort. You should really try it out with me. Perhaps when all of this hullabaloo is past us, I can have a contest and host the winner in my bed for my show. It wouldn’t be the first time.

When I was a DJ at 89.7FM KFJC (88-97), our late, great engineer Eric Weaver liked to use me as a guinea pig when it came to live remotes. I hosted a number of live morning shows from local cafes, when we had the idea of hosting a show from my bedroom. It was fundraiser time and we figured someone would want a chance of having spending the morning in bed with a dashing young DJ and a crew of engineers, all cramped in my little bedroom. And we were right! We called it “Breakfast in Bed with the Rev! I went by the Reverend Dah Wave back in those days. Truth be told John Hell was born in late August 1994. But that story is for another time.

I can’t recall much about the couple that donated for the chance to spend their morning in bed with me. They were in their 20s, and thought it would be a hoot to spend 6-10am in the San Mateo bedroom with a long haired non-commercial radio DJ, his three roommates, and three staff members of KFJC. Actually one of my roommates was a KFJC staffer (RIP Spiderman). I made everyone pancakes, eggs and bacon for breakfast, and for the mic breaks I made them jump into my bed with me. It had to feel real, so every 10-20 minutes for four hours they had snuggle up with me in my queen-sized bed…with my engineer and another staffer sitting around too.

The music was being played back in the KFJC studios. We would “hand off” to the board op when we were done talking, and coordinate when to come back live to my bedroom.

Why am I telling you all of this? Oh right, I have been doing my shows from my bed ever since this pandemic has started. At least I’m lucky enough to be able to do this. Trust me, I do not take it for granted. I will not just phone in a show. I really love being able to share two hours a week with you. I’m thinking about taking on a second slot where I can play my live show in full. I have thousands. Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself. I still have a few hundred to add to that list, and it just keeps on growing.

I’ll keep playing the music. You keep listening, and we’ll get through all of this together.

Enjoy.

For the people in the back, I’ll tell the story again.

I used to host a mid-day jazz/soul/funk show at KFJC 89.7FM on the Foothill College campus, south of Stanford. I was there 88-97, but only hosted this particular show from 93-95 I think. Anyway, every Friday at noon I would play 30 minutes of James Brown, and called it “The Brown Bag Lunch”. It was so much fun. Being on a college campus means that a lot of coeds would walk by, and me being a young 20-something, I would keep the studio door open to the walking path, and the monitors turned way up, to really feel the funk! And I would dance, and I would sing, and I would turn on the mic and I would shout in James Brown fashion, YEEEEEEEEOW!

It was fun.

I even got to interview the Godfather by phone before one of his Bay Area shows. I tell the story during this show…again.

Every May 3rd KFJC hosts a 24+ hour Mayhem special in celebration of James Brown’s birthday called “Doin’ It To Death”. I always get very excited to host a four hour set; it’s like a holiday for me. My employer is aware of this, and supports it. Thanks boss!

There was no birthday special this year. Thanks COVID-19.

So instead I thought I would play two hours of James Brown for you Monday night. And then a miraculous thing happened: DJ Doug, who follows me on Monday nights 10-midnight, couldn’t make it! So I have four hours of the Hardest Working Man In Show Business. Mr. Please Please Please. Soul Brother #1. The Minister of the New New Super Cool Funk. Mr. Dynamite Himself: JAMES BROWN!!!!

Yeah, it’s like that. I keep mostly to my favorite era, 1968-1975.

Everybody is here: Maceo, Fred, Pee Wee, Bobby Byrd, The Female Preacher Lyn Collins, Clyde and Jab’O, Bootsie and Phelps Collins, and so many more to funk up your day, and piss James off.

The second half of the show focuses on my live collection of James Brown. This is some groovy funk for your face.

So get on the good foot, put on your hot pants, and get ready to be a sex machine for the next four hours!!!

Enjoy.
