Sometimes when I’m hosting my show in the studio it actually feels like you are right there with me. I feel like I’m talking directly to you! I see you on the couch across from the console, watching me watching you, and I get excited to share my music with you, right then, right there.

That’s how it felt on Monday night.

Starting off with the some contemporary genius’ of the garage/punk world: Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall, both live from The Chapel in SF. These two tracks, back-to-back show you me current mood: kinetic and frenetic. I’ve got a lot of energy to shed and share.

Throughout the night it’s a mix of old and new, punk, funk and junk. You know, just as always. And only two cover tunes this week!

I was considering hosting a power trio special, but I want to take a few more weeks to prepare. Stay tuned. I’m also reminded that November is coming, which means my 8th annual Annual Annual is right around the corner. Which year should I focus on this time around. If you want to see my previous Annual Annual shows take a look here. Scroll down that page and find the links you seek.

In the meantime I’m just going to relax and picture you on the couch in front of the console doing lovely and nasty things to yourself as I play DJ.

Enjoy.

It’s that time once again when I get to indulge my inner Dave Morey and focus my show on one special year. This is my seventh annual Annual Annual, and this year it’s all about 1992. I turned 22 in late September and was deeply involved at KFJC as well as attending countless live shows around the Bay Area.

The club scene was really good to me too. South Bay spots like Marsugi’s and One Step Beyond were regular hot spots for us KFJC folks. I also spent a lot time at The Stone in SF, Paradise Lounge, Above Broadway, Slims, um, er, my brain is hurting trying to remember all the places. I recall The Omni924 Gillman StreetBerkeley Square, and Freight and Salvage in the East Bay too. And of course many many Grateful Dead shows up and down the west coast. 1992 was a really fun year for me.

As for the music, the indie scene was at a peak since Nirvana went super duper platinum (is that a ranking?) the previous fall with Nevermind. Major labels were doing everything they could to swipe up the next big thing. Some really horrible knockoff bands were popping up on commercial radio during this time. Some things never change.

I was hosting the 6-10AM morning show on Wednesday’s at KFJC. The music below feels like I took it straight from one of my playlists from that time. It’s possible I did. Granted we weren’t allowed, by FCC rules, to play any music with naughty language, so there are a few tracks on here that I would have loved to have played back then, but could not. Count yourself lucky for the advent of internet radio!

Take a walk down memory lane for the next two hours and enjoy 1992 like it never left us.

Enjoy.

This ain’t no bar fight (though I’m fairly confident that Cash would win). No, this is a love fest. Johnny Cash and Nick Cave have more in common, musically, than many other combos. Cave has claimed that it was the fire and brimstone preachers of the American south that have inspired him the most in his songwriting, while Cash lived it by being raised there!

I’ve been wanting to host this special for a while now, but it’s not easy with only two hours to cover two men of such musical prominence. I’m sure the critics can tear my sets apart, which is fine. How would you improve on this show? Leave comments. In retrospect, I could have played Cave’s version of “The Singer”, and left out the Cash/Dylan duet. Other than that I could have used about six more hours to really do them justice. Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions on my FB thread.

Next Monday night will feature lots of new music and some psych jams.

Enjoy.
