It’s December so it’s time for my obligatory BEST of show…kinda. If anything it’s a chance to play great music! And isn’t that why you tune in week after week? You do tune in, don’t you? That’s interesting. I just realized that I asked “don’t you”, and not “do not you”. Huh.

My show isn’t all about 2018 music, however. Just take a gander at the playlist below and you’ll note the diversity in the sets. Yes folks, we here at Radio Valencia believe the only good radio is diverse radio. Why I play all kinds of diverse genres: metal, heavy metal, death metal, speed metal, stoner metal, and doom metal. Don’t be fooled by our competitors, they only program to the lowest common denominator. We have discovered a way to much much lower.

That being said, there was a lot of great music in 2018. Albums by King TuffOh SeesMudhoneySleep, and of course a few by Ty Segall, are just a glimpse into what was another stellar year for the indie rock/garage scene.

I encourage you to tune in to Radio Valencia throughout the rest of 2018 for more Best of shows from some of the finest DJs west of East Orange, New Jersey.

I’m taking the next two weeks off to celebrate family and friends. I suggest you do the same. I’ll be scheduling some of my favorite Hell’s Kitchen Radio programs to play in my absence. I encourage you to have it playing in the background during your family celebrations. I’m available for Bar Mitzvah’s too!

Happy Holidaze to you and yours from me, and all of us at Radio Valencia. See you in 2019!

How exactly did the week pass by without me posting my show? I hate when that happens. I don’t just blindly pick music. I take my time to curate a show for you. I would love nothing more than to wax poetic about why I chose what I did for you on this fine night, but alas I cannot for the life of me recall anything beyond the fact it was Memorial Day, and I also picked up the new Sleep and Wooden Shjips LPs.

That’ll have to do.

Oh, and you absolutely MUST check out the “Message from Daimo” track later in the show. It’s hilarious if you know Daimo. Even if you don’t…

Enjoy.

I’m sleep deprived, so don’t hold me too accountable for what follows. …I’m trying hard to think of something witty to say. Hmmm. Who knew sleep was so damn important?

Ah yes, my show this week! I was able to get to my Fats Domino tribute. You probably only know him through his seminal hit “Blueberry Hill”, but his sound helped define early rock and roll, rhythm and blues, with a touch of jump swing. His stride piano style was always evident in the New Orleans sound, whether he was playing one of his own songs of love and heartbreak, or a carefully chosen cover. I grew up in a household where my dad (born 1941) played a lot of blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Fats played a central role in my early musical development, which I’m certain I didn’t realize until he passed away a few weeks back at the age of 89.

The balance of my show features new music from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (their third full-length release of 2017!) and Boris. There’s some long noisy jams via Aluk Todolo, a jazzy cover by Sex Mob, a “weird” cover by The Residents, stoner spacey jams from Sleep, and an Op/Ed from John Lennon. There’s more as you’ll see below. Also, I gave tickets away to see Fu Manchu. Did you know that I often have tickets to local shows I give away on my show? You didn’t?!?!?! Tune in and WIN!!! There’s so much winning. You’re going to get tired of all the winning, I promise you.

I’ve been spending too much time on Twitter lately. There are links below.

Next Monday night is my 7th annual Annual Annual!!! That’s two hours from one year. I’m thinking about hosting 1992.

Enjoy.

I think I play it a little too safe on my show from time to time. There are nights that I bring a lot of black metal, or speed metal, or, well, anything darker than I usually play for you, but I hold off thinking “they don’t want to hear this stuff”. I think I’ve been insulting you, and for that I am sorry. I just didn’t want to ostracize my audience. I fell into the “lowest-common-denominator” style of programming. Damn, what is wrong with me?

To make up for my radio shortcomings I decided to get fairly dark tonight. There’s some metal, punk and garage thrown in, as well as some pretty choice hard rock cuts. It’s loud, it’s fun, and from the feedback I received during the show, well-considered.

Radio is supposed to be about the art of the segue. I choose music that I believe will move you. That doesn’t mean it will always be a pleasant movement. It does mean that I have thought hard about why I want to play this song, and hope that you will take the time to consume it. I’m painting a two hour audio picture just for you. Isn’t that great?! Just another in the many reasons that I love Radio Valencia.

Next week I’ll probably play two hours of Americana and Bakersfield Country. Also, I have tickets to see Dave and Phil Alvin to give away. Tune in!

This Thursday night at Folio Books on 24th Street in Noe Valley, I’m interviewing music critic and author Joel Selvin about his latest book “Altamont, The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day”. It should make for a great hour. It starts at 7PM. Come on down and meet me and Joel, and get a copy of this great read. I flew through it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Altamont. Well I do now.

Enjoy.

Spinning a two hour set is always a hoot for me, but having a co-host who meshes with my style, and also knows how to throw me a surprise of three is always a real pleasure. On Monday’s show I was thrilled to have Radio Valencia‘s Gatsby Fassbinder, host of Tighten Up Your Wig, Thursday’s 4-6PM. If you like my show you’re going to love his. Like myself, Gatsby is a walking encyclopedia for all things that he knows he knows. His tracks are marked by “GB”.

New music from Melvins side project, Crystal Fairy, featuring Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes. Also, new music from Meatbodies from their latest LP “Alice”. A brand new 7″ is out from Zig Zags that is more metal-y than previous tracks, but no less scary. A classic Iggy Pop/James Williamson track from “Kill City”, a love song from Diamanda Galas, and the greatest fucking rock band of all time (next to the Melvins) SLEEP!

It’s safe to say that tonight was all about the ROCK! The talk is cheap and so are we. Not much more to add. I’d prefer to allow the music do the rocking.

Enjoy.
