Challenge Karaoke Holiday Party Friday Dec 16th

December 11, 9pm

This coming Friday is the biggest event of the year for Radio Valencia! It’s the…

Radio Valencia Challenge Karaoke Holiday Extravaganza ON ICE!!!!!

Okay, it’s not our biggest event of the year. But it’s truly fun and awesome. Here’s all the important details.

Friday, December 16, 2011
Time: 9:00pm until 12:30am
Where: Chez Poulet, 3359 Army Street SF

OK, it’s not really on ice. But Challenge Karaoke is super stupid and fun.

Here’s how it works. You pay something to sing a song. A few dollars. You sing. Then, someone can come and pay the same amount of money to stop you. You may resume, but it’s gonna cost you.

We made $80 once to get through American Pie.

And it’s perfectly legal for you to sign someone else up to sing! If they don’t wanna sing, they can pay their way out. It adds a cool
twist.

It’s terrible. Horrible. Awful. Don’t come. (No, really, please come!!!)

Starts at 9. Ends when everyone runs away screaming. All money goes to Radio Valencia equipment fund. Stuff breaks.

This is your chance to sing Madonna in a death metal style or sing Slayer like a lounge act. And Radio Valencia not only supports this, but strongly encourages it!

Dec. 10: The Hillbilly Hootenanny Holiday Jamboree

December 3, 12pm

Another very special live event is coming to RadioValencia on the afternoon of December 10th, broadcast live from our San Francisco Mission District studios at 2pm Pacific. It’s time again for Hillbilly Hootenanny, this time with a holiday theme!

Live country western music and comedy at the Hillbilly Hootenanny Holiday Jamboree broadcast live on RadioValencia.fm and in-person at The Chicken Shack–and all FREE.

Brought to you by Radio Valencia’s own Quarterman Jack host of Bakersfield Backbeat every Saturday at 2pm. This live version of the show includes live musical performances by Misisipi Mike Wolf, Kit Lopez (of Kit and the Branded Men), Pam Brandon (of Lost Weekend), Ben Fong-Torres, Jessica Rose, and more. Not to mention the house band led by the great Hank Maniger, plus regular comedy features “Pickin’ and Groanin'” and Mikl-em‘s “Hellacious Belles” comedy troupe,

The show is 100% free, though you are encouraged to make a donation to Radio Valencia, to help us keep great music and events like this coming!

Great country music & holiday tunes, and comedy: Don’t miss it!

Saturday Night (10/22) Karaoke Benefit Party for Radio Valencia!

October 21, 6pm

Come down to Chez Poulet (Cesar Chavez @ Mission) to sing and support Radio Valencia.

Join us as we bend, spindle and mutilate popular music and raise money for a great cause! Challenge Karaoke puts a fun twist on boring old Karaoke and really makes for a stupid evening. RSVP on Facebook.

It goes like this: You pay a small fee to sing (at least a dollar). During your song, anyone from the crowd can pay the KJ another dollar to shut you up. Then you or anyone else can pay a dollar to resume singing. Or up the ante… if you pay more, someone has to match it to shut you up. Then the twist… it is legal for someone else to sign you up to sing a song of THEIR choosing. It gets downright vicious!

Last time we did it we made over $500 for the station. We just updated and rewired the entire studio, got a new broadcast board and so on… dropped like $5,000. This small community station doesn’t have $5,000. So it’s Karaoke to pay the credit cards bills!!!

Did you know Radio Valencia has over 55 DJ’s? Did you know we have thosands of hours of podcasts, an Android and iPhone app and just yesterday David J (of Bauhaus) was on the station? Cool shit is happening over here. You should listen: www.radiovalencia.fm

Karaoke is $10 to get in. Starts at 9. Your KJ is Paul DeJong.

See ya there!!!!!

Hillbilly Hootenanny This Saturday!

October 19, 4pm

Huge big party at the station this weekend. 2-4 pm ! All the best local Americana performers will be there for this big show!!! Quarterman Jack hosts this wild party with Mikl Em and his Hellacious Belles Comedy Troupe. All of the heavy hitter local Americana performers will do 2 songs of their favorite singer of the 50′s or 60′s. Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette… they will all be there.

Chicken will do ELVIS!

Radio Valencia DJ’s and Shows @ Twitter

April 17, 7pm

Radio Valencia is branching out to all of the finer social networks out there on the series of tubes known as the Internet. We hope that you will follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook, and that you will also follow all your favorite DJs (on Twitter, please don’t stalk them).

On Twitter you will find us @RadioValenciaSF, where we talk about station news (including new blog posts like this one), let you know about special events, and sometimes about the show currently on the air.

There are more than a dozen Radio Valencia DJs and shows that have their own Twitter accounts. You can follow them all, en masse, via this Twitter list, and you can also peruse the list and pick and choose your favorites to follow. As more DJs get Twitter accounts, we will continue to add them to the list.

Many of our DJ’s have blogs here on the Radio Valencia site. A list of these is on the right side of this page, below the chat window. Many also have Facebook pages or other blogs that you might be interested in. We’ll be publishing a fuller list of those soon. But we’d appreciate you checking out the station’s Fan Page and giving us a like at http://www.facebook.com/RadioValencia.

As always, thanks for your support!

  • DJ mikl-em (of the CanHazDJ show) takes you back to the golden era of radio comedy with a live performance of the Marx Brothers original radio show “Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel”. This fast-paced comedy features Groucho and
Chico (Harpo may be there, too, but he doesn’t have any lines) in an episode first broadcast in 1933. A stellar cast featuring members of the Chicken Scratch Improv will bring a nearly 80 year-old comedy back to hilarious life before your very eyes.
  • Sean Kelly (aka Freakatronic) will debut a new act honoring the History of Radio.
HEAR: ‘O Holy Night’ an antique rendition of broadcasts’s first song on radio.
SEE: Sean Kelly do a burlesque style Balloon Dance with a stun gun.
JUMP: to the pop of the balloons.
TASTE: The delicious food being served to raise funds for a new mixing board.
WONDER: Where he got a stun gun.
  • Trademark G and Miss Frillypants (aka Evolution Control Committee) will unearth from their vault of unmentionable recordings a mash up of radio spots, commercials, presidential speeches, public service announcements and porn. It’s hard to describe what they do, but it’s always amazing.
  • DENNIS THE MENACE: WHEN TOP 40 RADIO RULED THE EARTH!
DTM attributes his 35 year radio career to the some of the most talented and creative DJ’s on earth who he had the rare opportunity to learn from! At the age of 13, he snuck past the guards on 6th Avenue in New York City to watch his D.J. Idols broadcast on 77 WABC. Soon after, he auditioned and was given Top 25 countdown show on a suburban radio station. Since then he’s broadcast on the legendary Top 40 KISS-108 Boston and other stations before bringing his syndicated shows to Radio Valencia! Tonight, he regales us with tales, pictures, and rare airchecks that only scratch the surface of his passion for this long gone radio format.
  • From the Nose Hair Lint Gland gang: a satirical re-enactment of the famous 1937 radio broadcast of the Hindenberg disaster. Delivered in the voice of 1937 radio reporter Herbert Morrison. Everything will go perfectly with this because it always always does.
  • And finally, DJ Extra Kate [of the Place Tales show] is doing to do a
short symposium on the War of the Worlds broadcast from 1938, in which America thought it was an actual invasion and there was panic in the streets, looting and mass hysteria! She will then play some of it for your amusement!
