THE POP GROUP’s MARK STEWART On Geek EmaNation Podcast!

Pop Group 2THE POP GROUP exploded brilliantly in the late ’70s-early ’80s and then members splintered off for years to other worthy musical projects.  They reemerged in the 2010s with great performances, a new album (Citizen Zombie) and some essential reissues.  Last year brought a re-release of their seminal sophomore effort For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder, and this episode of The Geek EmaNation Show features that album in its entirety along with feisty commentary by co-founder MARK STEWART.  Time to draw a line, fellow music geeks!

Teenage ZombieI’ve never seen the film myself, and may never bother, but the soundtrack to I Was A Teenage Zombie showed up at my doorstep (because I bought it on Discogs) and it brought me back to some of my favorite indie-rock bands from the 1980s in a big way.  Share a celebration of the golden age of indie-rock with me, The Rock’N’Roll Nurse, on this nostalgia-filled episode of The Geek EmaNation show.  Thirty years rolls by in a flash, fellow music geeks!

FEELIES’ GLENN MERCER On Geek EmaNation Podcast!

January 13, 2016
11:40 pm

G MercerFans of so-called “indie-rock” tend to swoon at the name FEELIES.  This legendary east-coast originated band provided the missing link between The VELVET UNDERGROUND/LOU REED/BRIAN ENO on one end and R.E.M./NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL/DECEMBERISTS on the other.  The latest instrumental album by FEELIES’ co-founder GLENN MERCER sounds like the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary road film, and incorporates all the depth, fun and surprise that the great FEELIES’ releases had in spades.  Hear interview snippets with Mr. MERCER spliced together with every cut from Incidental Hum, and then the entirety of the FEELIES’ classic Crazy Rhythms on this indie-rockerific show.  Original Geeks are the true OGs, fellow music geeks!

Beggars Banquet Bands on Geek (Ema)Nation Podcast!

One PoundThe 1980s could be a pretty dodgy time for pop/dance music, but the Beggars Banquet label had a lot of the best bands of the era on it, most of which stand the test of time quite well.  With the likes of NICO, JOHN CALE, The FALL, LOVE AND ROCKETS and The CULT on the roster, there were some pretty creative sounds being distributed in the UK by BB.  One Pound Ninety-Nine was what this comp cost back in the day, and it’s a pretty nice sampler of the label’s finest acts circa 1985.  Hear the whole LP and other songs by some of the artists represented, with running commentary by host The Rock’N’Roll Nurse.  Get that Brit on, fellow geeks!

Not So QuietA bit over 30 years ago, SF mainstay punk publication MAXIMUM ROCK’N’ROLL released a groundbreaking hardcore punk compilation called “Not So Quiet On The Western Front” featuring offerings by 47 bands from Northern California and Nevada.  More than a dusty historical document today, it exists as a memorable blast of energy from an underground scene on the verge of national and international breakout.  The Rock’N’Roll Nurse plays the 2-LP original album in its entirety, and then adds a fave extra from local heroes ANGST.  Skank like a geek, punks!
