Dwight TwilleyCriminally overlooked despite producing one of the most stellar power-pop singles of the 1970s (“I’m On Fire”), DWIGHT TWILLEY BAND is finally getting its due in films like Diary Of A Teenage Girl 40 years later.  The 2 LPs that were the total output of the band between 1974-1978 are quite amazing in their songcraft from beginning to end, and you can hear both Sincerely and Twilley Don’t Mind in their entirety in this episode of GE.  Make TOM PETTY move over, fellow music geeks!

DamnedThe mighty DAMNED recently played our fair town, untold years after they first started playing their brand of punky pop music, and it was quite an amazing thing to witness.  The experience inspired yours truly, The Rock’N’Roll Nurse, to play their epically undercheered power-pop masterpiece Strawberries in its entirety, and plenty of other great DAMNED songs as well.  Out DAMNED spot out I say, fellow music geeks!

Way down south in Los Angeles, Greg Shaw was a musical visionary from the 1960s to the 2000s whose influence on all kinds of underground musics should not be underestimated.  He championed IGGY POP and the FLAMIN’ GROOVIES when no major label would give them the time of day, promoted the ROMANTICS, 20/20, PLIMSOULS and the SHOES before major labels had any idea who they were, and existed on the DIY edge of proto-punk/garage/power pop/indie rock long before it was cool.  Tune into the Geek (Ema)Nation podcast to hear The Best Of Bomp! and much, much more!

In the 1970s and early 1980s Berkeley was home to several great and influential record labels, including Fantasy Records (once home to CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL and SYLVESTER).  But more beloved by true believers in power pop and underground rock was the Beserkley label, started in 1973 by ace manager/producer Matthew King Kaufman.  Over the course of the next 11 years Beserkley was home to national acts like JONATHAN RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS and Bay Area locals like GREG KIHN, EARTHQUAKE and the RUBINOOS.  Hear highlights from the legendary compilation LP “Beserkley Chartbusters” and LPs from many of the label’s tuneful artists on the podcast of this week’s Geek (Ema)Nation show with your host the Rock’N’Roll Nurse!
