BRIAN WILSON’s Fab Collabs on Geek EmaNation Podcast!

July 2, 2015
9:18 pm

Beach BoysIn the period 1965-66, The BEACH BOYS were in major transition, moving from an infectious touring pop band playing its innocuous pop hits to a serious contender in the pop artistry sweepstakes.  At the heart of this change was songwriter/producer wunderkind BRIAN WILSON and his chosen lyrical collaborators Tony Ashton and Van Dyke Parks.  The result was two intriguing and engaging albums, Pet Sounds and Smile.  While Pet Sounds stands as a beautifully creative response to The BEATLES’ Rubber Soul, Smile was destined to be abandoned and never officially released.  Hear both works in their entirety (the latter as re-recorded and finished by WILSON and PARKS in 2004) and selections with the hastily recorded Smiley Smile on this episode of GE.  The pain of genius unmasked, fellow music geeks!

ARGENT’s Ardent Pop-Prog on Geek EmaNation Podcast!

May 1, 2015

ArgentGE gets woefully obscure in a 2-hour celebration of the mostly forgotten ’70s pop-prog pioneers ARGENT.  From the ashes of Brit baroque-pop sensations The ZOMBIES came an ambitious band bent on breaking musical barriers led by keyboard wizard ROD ARGENT (and including his cousin JIM RODFORD on bass).  Mostly known for 1 smash hit (1972s “Hold Your Head Up”) and 1 cult classic (1973s “God Gave Rock And Roll To You”), their first 5 LPs informed the young musical palate of your host The Rock’N’Roll Nurse, and he obsessively presents highlights from those records for your aural pleasure.  Prog-Lite forever, fellow music geeks!
