Mr. Lewis Reed Leaves Us!
December 18, 2013 4:00pm
Mr. Lewis Reed (AKA Lou Reed) was a songster/scenester/huckster who arguably was the most important influence on underground rock’n'roll music to this day. Lester Bangs worshiped him and reviled him in seemingly equal amounts, and he could be utterly brilliant and completely obnoxious almost in the same breath. This episode of GE will present a chronological overview of Mr. Reed’s career from the early 1960s to the late 1970s for your listening pleasure!
Mick Farren Leaves His Deviants!
December 11, 2013 4:00pm
Mick Farren passed in July of this year, but his musical and writing accomplishments will live on for years to come. As singer/songwriter/spiritual leader of The SOCIAL DEVIANTS (later The DEVIANTS) he preached musical revolution from the pulpits of many stages backed by an amazing array of influential musicians, some of whom would eventually morph into the PINK FARIES. Hear the sounds of youth exploding in the 1960s and beyond on this incendiary episode of GE!
Bootsey X Leaves Detroit!
December 4, 2013 4:00pm
Bob Mulrooney (AKA Bootsey X) was a pivotal figure in Detroit garage history of the 1980s and 1990s, and his recent death brings back to light what a great musical force he was, even though he operated in near obscurity. This episode of GE will include many great Detroit bands from the golden age of the 1990s, with plenty of on-the-spot commentary by the Rock’N'Roll nurse, and killer tracks by the likes of The LOVEMASTERS, The HENTCHMEN, WHITE STRIPES, DETROIT COBRAS, DIRTBOMBS, GORIES, and many more!
Call 415!
November 27, 2013 4:00pm
The early 1980s were a great time for New Wave in San Francisco, with 415 Records promoting plenty of great local acts like TRANSLATOR, WIRE TRAIN, RED ROCKERS and ROMEO VOID. They also were responsible for this stellar compilation of largely (criminally!) overlooked bands like The OFFS and The MUTANTS, among others. Get on that local New Wave, fellow music geeks!
Another Day In The Big World!
November 20, 2013 4:00pm
GE takes yet another trip back to the swinging ’80s with this compilation from Columbia Records from 1984. Hear the sounds of WHAM!, EUROGLIDERS, ROMEO VOID, BANGLES, DAVE EDMUNDS, RED ROCKERS and I AM SIAM as they were smushed together for this promo-only LP. Another day for New Wave, fellow music geeks!
A Wicked Good Time!
November 13, 2013 4:00pm
Back in the 1980s, Boston was a locus for great indie-rock (before it was even widely known as indie-rock). Bands like MISSION OF BURMA blasted out a raw but intelligent sound across the nation. Modern Method Records put out several fine compilations documenting the Boston sound of the time, and the first Wicked Good Time comp will be featured on this GE episode, with the likes of LA PESTE, BOYS LIFE, and YOUNG SNAKES (before they became ‘TIL TUESDAY) strutting their stuff. More sounds from 30+ years ago, fellow music geeks!
Say No! To Nukes!
November 6, 2013 4:00pm
Back in the 1980s nuclear war and nuclear energy were major topics of discussion and activism. Even yours truly, The Rock’N'Roll Nurse, got arrested for protesting at a nuclear weapons plant! These issues may seem like long past images in the rear view mirror, but they haven’t really disappeared. In an effort to re-energize your thinking about nukes, Geek (Ema)Nation presents this compilation from 1982 in its entirety, featuring choice cuts by The CLASH, The JAM, The UNDERTONES, The AU PAIRS and other exciting bands of the time. No proliferation here, fellow music geeks!
The Prince's Trust Collection!
October 30, 2013 4:00pm
This 2-LP Compilation released in 1985 (as seen on TV! it says in the lower right corner) says it contains prime tracks by “the cream of British rock” and the money gathered from sales was supposed to go to a trust devoted to “exploring ways in which young people who felt alienated in our modern society might be encouraged to help themselves.” Lofty goals indeed. Some decent music too, although tracks by the likes of BILL WYMAN, JIMMY PAGE and ROBERT PLANT seem pretty bloated and gratuitous compared to the new wave sounds of KATE BUSH, MADNESS, and even (gasp!) DURAN DURAN. Creamy Brit-Rock for you, fellow music geeks!
IRS Records' Early
October 23, 2013 4:00pm
In the early ’80s no U.S. label was pumping out New Wave music emanating from the underground as ferociously as IRS Records. Bands as diverse as The DAMNED, The BUZZCOCKS, The FALL, The POLICE, ALTERNATIVE TV, CHELSEA, The CRAMPS, The FLESHTONES and many others got their starts on this forward-looking label. This episode features a solid 2xLP compilation released by IRS in 1981. Get hip to the new sound of 30 years back, fellow music geeks!
RNRN Random!
October 16, 2013 4:00pm
Your host the Rock'N'Roll Nurse had jury duty and got to the show late without any preparation in place whatsoever, but by pulling some choice '70s and '80s LPs (and a 2013 release by HENRY PLOTNICK called Fields) off the wall he got a pretty listenable show together. Hear the results here!
Bad '70s Music In Your Ears!
October 2, 2013 4:00pm
The Rock'N'Roll Nurse was detained by jury duty, but managed to find some bad '70s records laying around the studio and put them together for a 50 minute exercise in aural excremental excitement. Check out those lost sounds from 30+ years ago, fellow music geeks!
Portland Conceptualism!
September 25, 2013 4:00pm
For those who think that Portland was only responsible for cool and interesting music in the last 10 years will be astonished by this unusual (and somewhat inscrutable) concept record, featuring some of the best indie-rock bands from the ’90s. GUIDED BY VOICES, STEPHEN MALKMUS (of PAVEMENT), HOWE GELB (of GIANT SAND), GRANDADDY and The MINUS FIVE are just a few of the bands represented on this remarkable 2x LP set. Get conceptual, fellow music geeks!
Buncha Newly Acquired LPs!
September 18, 2013 4:00pm
The Rock’N'Roll Nurse was on tour with RAKEHELL and GO PILLS since the beginning of September, and along the way he picked up some choice vinyl morsels from disparate places as Eugene, OR and Los Angeles, CA. Highlights from the spoils will be presented with plenty of commentary on this week’s edition of GE. Get that collector itch, fellow music geeks!

August 28, 2013 4:00pm
Unbelievable but true, the recent analog resurgence has also supported an explosion of wonderful prog/experimental titles on beautiful vinyl! Some great titles that have come my way recently (like the pictured masterpiece Fields by 12-year-old keyboard wizard HENRY PLOTNICK) will be allowed to tickle your ears on this episode of GE. Wade into some deeply underground waters, fellow music geeks!
S#%t From Around The Studio!
August 21, 2013 4:00pm
One of the great things about DJing at Radio Valencia is the cool records available in the station stacks. On this episode of GE, host The Rock’N'Roll Nurse will take full advantage of the vinyl available to all DJs instead of bringing his own. It will be a crazy and unpredictable musical roller coaster ride for all. Get super spontaneous, fellow music geeks!
Vintage 7" Madness!
August 14, 2013 4:00pm
Popdefect7" vinyl records used to be the best/cheapest way to find out about new and great bands, and were also underground music's version of the business card, especially in the 1980s. Your pal The Rock'N'Roll Nurse collected quite a few of these original "compact discs" back in the day, and he reveals some memorable faves by the likes of POPDEFECT, RHYTHM PIGS, MINUTEMEN, MY DAD IS DEAD and many others on this episode. Spin 'til you drop, fellow music geeks!
New Vinyl Releases!
August 7, 2013 4:00pm
As part of the Rock’N'Roll Nurse’s quixotic quest to promote the current Analog Resurgence!, he features big chunks of some terrific new vinyl releases on this edition of Geek (Ema)Nation. Hear cool new sounds by the likes of The EJECTOR SEATS, PAUL ROESSLER (of The SCREAMERS and 45 GRAVE), Turkey’s own KLEPTI KLEPTI, LIQUORBALL, and host the RNRN’s own extreme solo project RAKEHELL, all on a cool old format. Polyvinyl Chloride rules (even if it isn’t very Green), fellow LP-addled geeks!
Say No! To Male Violence!
July 31, 2013 4:00pm
Back in the ’90s there was more than just boy-dominated grunge music. In the U.S. and the U.K. in particular women and men who love women played a passionate music that was not afraid to confront thorny issues like rape and abuse. Garden Of Delights records put out a terrific compilation record in the mid-’90s as a benefit for a women’s aid group featuring amazing honest songs by the like of AZALIA SNAIL, TELEVISION PERSONALITIES, JOWE HEAD, The PETALS, CUB and GOD IS MY CO-PILOT amongst others. Hear the entire compilation and fave tracks by bands on the comp on this episode. Love and respect toward women always, fellow passionate geeks!
New Wave Marketing Exposed Again!
July 17, 2013 4:00pm
In 1981 2 sampler records of so-called “New Wave” music were released by Columbia Records as an inexpensive introduction to a bunch of newly signed bands, including The PSYCHEDELIC FURS, OMD, and TOMMY TUTONE among others. Hear how a second “cheap peak at today’s provocative new rock” attempted to market and sell New Wave just as Slash Magazine’s Claude Bessy was declaring that “there is no such thing as New Wave”. Hear the sounds used to sell the scam, fellow skeptical music geeks!
