There are times that I really want to send a sternly written letter to some commercial radio station, reminding them of the disservice they are doing to their listeners. It's almost as if they are some junkie pushing tainted drugs. The user doesn't even know there are quality drugs down to the left end of town (or in most cases left end of the dial). In this case on the left end of the internet.

But why write a letter when I can just share this show, right? Should I send this show off to the program directors of the top commercial stations so they can see how much better they can be (that sounds pretty egotistical, and I didn't even need to reread it), or shall I just go to where their listeners hang out and offer them a better bang for the buck.

Allow me to bang you. Bang you all.

It was tax day on Monday, so there are a few tunes that fit some kind of money theme, but other than that, I'm all over the place in a good way. I even improvise a bit more than usual and through in the 23 minute epic, "Echoes", by Pink Floyd. It's the greatest version you have ever heard. Tune in to find out why. I'm also falling in love with Mike Krol. This guy...sheesh!

I've been pulling out a number of anniversary box sets lately. CSN&Y, Ray Charles, The Who. I have new Ty Segall later in the show that will kick your ass. And that's what you want in a radio station, shows that will kick your ass in ways you didn't know you needed.

It's James Brown's birthday. Whatever you're doing isn't better than what I'm playing for the next four hours. Get on the good foot, I'm starting out with two hours of live JB throughout the years, then two hours of studio selections from across his illustrious career, focusing on my favorite era 1968 - 1975.

I was lucky to have seen the Hardest Working Man in Show Business perform live three times, and each was better than the previous. I was also honored to have interviewed him in 1992 (or was it 1993?) soon after he got out of prison, during my Friday 10am-2pm jazz, soul, funk show on KFJC, Temple of the Bird. He graciously offered my 15 minutes to talk about his music and not to bring up prison, women, or drugs. Thanks James.

Hosting a special is always a treat. I like the work once I'm inspired. A few weeks ago this "Hello/Goodbye" idea popped into my head. It's not very original, but it's what you do with it that counts. How would you fill a two hour show of only songs that have the theme in the title, or are obviously about the theme?

I need to thank my buddy Michael for a few suggestions as well as many of the KALX staffers for throwing a few hundred titles my way. Wow! It's an embarrassment of riches. I only have two hours to fill, so I wanted hour one to be the "Hello" theme, and hour two to close it out with the "Goodbye" theme. I opened and closed with Cheap Trick: "Hello There" and Auf Wiedersehen". To segue from one to the other, I used the over-obvious Beatles tune "Hello/Goodbye".

During my research I discovered there are countless songs about goodbye. It makes for a more emotional tale, than a song featuring a greeting. That being said, I think I represented both salutations well. You be the judge.

Next week it'll be mostly new music, and we're getting closer to being in our new studio on 22nd Street in San Francisco. Let the excitement commence!

There's something about hosting a thematic special that really gets the juices flowing. I don't know if this was really a special, but I stuck with one genre for the most part on this show. My fabulous daughter, Little Lauson Hell tells me she doesn't like Country music. To which I respond, you just haven't really heard good Country music. Like anyone with musical taste, commercial anything is usually crap, that's goes double for Country, but there have been some real treats in the history of this genre. I merely scratched the surface by playing some of my favorite artists. And it's not hit-heavy as you will see.

And I didn't program this show chronologically. So there.

How has time changed for you over the past year? Some days, when I'm busy teaching, grading, cleaning up the Hellhole, and caring for the Hell spawn, it seems to fly right by, leaving me wonder where the Hell all this free time is? Then there are days when I fell it drag right along, as if the seconds are actually ticking backwards. What are we going to remember about this time a decade from now? Is there anything you have been putting off that you really need to get to before we all head back out into the world we think we knew? How do you want to approach the post-pandemic world? Will you rush back in, jumping at the chance to go everywhere and see everyone? Or are you going to slowly ease in, keeping your mask on deep into 2021, and quietly judging anyone who has the gall to walk around without a mask?

What's it going to be?

I received my two Pfizer vaccinations a few weeks back, with no side effect besides a minor soreness at the injection site, and I'm keeping my mask on until we're given the go ahead to take it off. I don't want to be the guy who can't get sick, but carries the virus and gets others sick. Not on my watch!

Since San Francisco is moving closer to the yellow tier, this means that Radio Valencia is getting closer to opening our new studio at 3227 22nd Street. This is a storefront location, and I cannot wait to start broadcasting my show live from there. I hunger for the energy of our own studio once again, interviewing people, getting loud, and letting my hair down. Don't get me wrong, the concept of doing my show from my bedroom is oh so much fun, but being reminded that it's Bodhi's bedtime, and not to talk so loudly is really putting a crimp in my style. KnowWhatIMean?

That being said, I'm really excited about this recent show of mine. I was off last week, so I had a lot of music saved up to share with you all. I think I painted the scene nicely. I'm taking too much time thinking about how to describe this show. It shouldn't take this long. It should just flow, you know? The show flowed well. I had been listening to a lot of compilations during the week leading up to the show, so a lot of what you hear are from a few that stood out.

I don't look at compilations for songs that have been previously released. Sometimes the joy of a good comp is that rare track, the alternative take (some of which is obvious why it was never released in the first place), guest musicians, and the such.

I enjoy covers a lot, and if you tune in regularly you're aware of this. There are times when I dig deep for the original; much of the time it's an old blues take.

There are no fewer than ten covers tonight, and a few alternate and rare takes thrown in too. Check out the Richard Hell set, featuring his early days with Tom Verlaine (Neon Boys and Television). He also recorded a record with Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth: Dim Stars.

Check out the birthday tribute to Phil Lesh, who turned 81 on Monday, featuring a cavalcade of "stars" covering a rarely played Grateful Dead tune, "Unbroken Chain". I posted the video from this session at the bottom of this post. It's well worth the listen and the viewing.

There's also a birthday tribute to Sly Stone who turned 78 on Monday.

I could go on and on about the sets I played, but I think you're here for the music. In a rare twist, there aren't any new releases in this show. Next week I'll throw down some new music for you dig.

I always like the response to the question asked to late Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, when she was asked how many women on the high court would satisfy here? Her response: 9. I love that. There were 9 men between 1789 - 1981 when Sandra Day O'Conner was appointed. Isn't it time for a high court full of women?

Women are rising to greater heights in government, academia and industry, and of course some of the most amazing singers and musicians throughout history have been women. Tonight it's all about some of my favorite women. Most are female-fronted bands, but there are many all-women groups here, solo artists, and a few duets peppered in for good measure.

Well damn if that wasn't fun. During the week I'm always listening to music; my own collection and a lot of non-commercial radio: Radio Valencia, KALC and KFJC mostly. Thankfully the Shazam app exists. I cannot tell you how often I use that app. Personally I believe it to be the greatest app ever made in the history of app-kind. Quite possibly it's the greatest invention since the printing press! OK maybe since radio. What do I know?

My point: many of the artists I still get turned onto come from listening to quality radio stations, with hosts who really know their music.

What a time to be quarantined!

I'm hoping we're allowed into our new studio soon. I miss having people to interview from week to week. And we've got these great new digs on 22nd street, right next door to the Make Out Room. I really hope they're able to survive this pandemic. Word came today that the iconic Revolution Cafe has closed their doors, permanently. I would fly my flag at half mast if I had one.

Carrying on, here's a bunch of music that will sweep away the ennui, unless you get off on that kind of sensation? I will never yuck your yum.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War.

We have a lot of work to do.

Tonight is all about David Bowie!!! He's five years gone, and it hasn't gotten any easier. Tonight I have one of his absolute best live performances: the FINAL Ziggy Stardust performance. This July 3, 1973 performance is special for that along with the fact that only Bowie knew he would be "killing" Ziggy on this night. Not even his manager or closest friends were aware of this! Going out at the top, indeed. Can you even imagine?

Strap in for one of the finest shows in rock and roll history. It's time for Bowie!

Sometimes I have to forgive myself if I'm just not feeling it. You know what I mean? We've been home for over ten months now, and the COVID wall is real, people. It's real! My day starts with my three old son climbing into bed with my wife and me. I'm the one who has the elbows in the face, the knee in the gut, the hot breath up my nose. Most weekdays I get him up, dressed, pack his food, and off to daycare (with very strict protocols for COVID, thank you very much).

Then I come home and get ready to teach. You know I'm a high school teacher, right? Don't even get me started about that. I love my work; it's never dull, but COVID has really put a damper on things. Poor kids. I also have a high school junior in the house: Little Lauson Hell, who you have met on this show many times over the years. I'm actually really proud of her. Her academics remain high, but it's her emotional fortitude that I'm more proud of. She keeps it together better than most adults I know.

As a teacher my work day doesn't really end, but since Mrs. Hell's job is more demanding (corporate work often is, if only because of the threat of the big boss man), I have to go pick up young Mr. Hell from daycare, bring him home, cook for him, and prepare him for bed. The fabulous Mrs and I alternate bedtimes with him, but by the time he lays down I'm spent.

This leaves little space for any downtime.

This is why I look forward to Monday nights with you. It's my only true creative outlet these days. So when I get a late start like I did on this show, it takes the winds out of my sails a wee bit. I brought it back up pretty quickly however, as we setlist below will show. It's the banter that'll keep you coming back (or drive you away in droves).

Dissonance, punk, metal, glam, hip hop, funk, Afro-funk, and more to whet your whistle. Tell 'em John Hell sent you.

There are good shows, and then there are shows when I am truly inspired. And tonight was such a night. And I can honestly say it was all about you, the listeners. Maybe I'm just excited to be losing 280 pounds on January 20th? I don't know, but this was a fun show to host.

Happy New Year, to you all! How did you celebrate the completion of one of the top 10 worst years in the history of our nation? I sat at home and watched the Melvins NYE special. Thanks fellas, that was a hoot!

Tonight was a night of firsts. I have never played Hank III before. Nor have I played Jake Blount (thanks Derlyn!!!), nor has Larry Boothroyd been played on my show as a session leader, though I have played plenty of Victim's Family in the past. And though Buddy Rich has graced these "airwaves", this record with Alla Rakha has never been on, though I look forward to sharing more from all of these artists in the future.

As for what 2021 has in store, it's all about this Georgia special election that's happening on Tuesday. I predict the two Democrats will win by slim margins. I also don't think the GOP candidates will do as well as Trump did. If the two Dems do win, I have to wonder how much sway Trump will have with the House and Senate GOP members with the electoral certification on Wednesday? By the time you are reading this, it'll probably be long over. How close were my predictions?
