In Volume #16, we contemplate existence where the consequences of our actions is deferred onto an inanimate object. The Portrait of Dorian Gray is a classic gothic novel written by Oscar Wylde and published in 1891. At the time it was not met with much fanfare, in fact, more with ill repute. It has since become one of the great tragic gothic novels of all time, one who's mark still echoes resoundingly in today's pop culture. You see it primarily in the behavior of actors and pop stars. Narcissism and exploitation of those around them and an expectation that the consequences of their actions will not come home to roost.
This is a musical expose that tours that subject matter and provides a great soundtrack for this evening's show.

This was a very fun experience with DJ Deatwish as my cohort in this first ever Alchemical Album Review featuring the Progressive Death Metal Band Ne Obliviscaris and their newest album Exul which was written and conceived pre-pandemic. The recordings began in February of 2020 and before they could be completed, band members became stranded abroad and thus delayed completion and ultimately, the release just arrived a few weeks ago.

I hope you enjoy the review, but mostly I hope you enjoy the music from this incredible band. If you find yourself so enamored, they are coming to play live in the bay area on Oct. 22, 2023 @ the DNA Lounge.

We do also want to pay tribute to the late Tina Turner who just passed today @ the age of 83. She was a true rocker, the gypsy, The Acid Queen, a survivor and a hero and an inspiration to many, and she will be missed. Our set ends with a great 10 minute live track from her.

Tonight's show was a celebration of a couple of things. We had our first annual March of Dimebags event hosted by the Skeevy Side Show, (and you should check out that podcast too....a lot of fun was had by all. As expected, it bled into my show time and I was prepared with one of the headiest bands out there, All Them Witches.

In 2022, Allan Van Cleeve re-entered the fold and the band, who had operated as a three piece from 2018-2021 (releasing the 2019 single 1x1 and the 2020 album Nothing as the Ideal), became whole again. In 2022, they released a Baker's Dozen of singles.

I have crafted them together into single long play album with a couple of interludes from other albums for me to speak over.

Since the dawn of time mankind has sought to the sky to seek truth to satiate the fear of the elements surrounding them and make sense of it all. The savage medulla oblongata driving their reptilian brains to seek a fear inoculum. Uses the sun, the comets, the stars to create gods and omens to guide them. This show is a series of songs that touch on that primal urge for understanding.

When I decided I wanted to add more "on air" time, I had a consideration to make. Do I double down on the Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour, or do I start up something new. In that consideration, I recalled a common theme. That all important "Things said after the word BUT." I really like your show BUT. The common theme was the HEAVY and DARK Stuff. People either didn't want it or wanted MORE of it. So, with that, I created this show, the Alchemist's Lair. This is where I indulge feeding the monster. Play out the dark metallic soundscapes that provide tension and release. The Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour will continue on Saturday nights and will not feature this dark heavy content, but will instead focus on the brighter side of my musical sphere. I'm not exactly sure where this proverbial "line in the sand" will be drawn. I suspect the lighter side of show may collide with the heavier side of that show. Obviously, the old content is the old content. If you're one of those rare inidividuals who can follow my extremes....bonus for you...you now have two shows to follow.
