Show #47: B Sides The Point Vol. 4!
November 23, 2014 10:00pm

Wax Crackle Pop
Show #47: B Sides The Point Vol. 4!
We here at W!C!P! are all about records. We like all kinds but, there’s something real special about the beloved 7″ or “45”. Back in the day, artists depended on singles to achieve their way to the top of the charts and later on independent artists relied on the 7″ format to sell at shows (inexpensively) to get their music into our hot little hands.

Every 7″ record has an “A” side that usually contains the “hit” or a song the artist obviously wants you to experience first. But sometimes on the “B” side is where things get interesting. Either labeled as “throwaways” or experimental recordings for particular artists, these tracks would sometimes become a hit themselves or be found deep on an album buried between other non hit songs; OR the assigned “B” side track just remained an orphan of sorts, existing solely beneath “A” territory.

Wax! Crackle! Pop! proudly presents a series, every other month (or so), where we exclusively investigate the other side, flipping it all over and that’s B SIDES THE POINT. Vinyl geek, B side enthusiasts John Seden and John Everett are regular guests!

Show #45: Records, Reptiles and Teenage Sex Therapy with Owen Maercks!
Folks! I'm super excited to have Owen Maercks as my special guest on this episode of Wax! Crackle! Pop! Owen made a pretty incredible album, titled "Teenage Sex Therapist" that just saw a full on vinyl release - 36 years AFTER it was produced and performed with Henry Kaiser among others. Talk about "ahead of it's time", this is truly a lost gem of avant power pop rock jazz and THEN SOME that you all must hear. And a great story to boot.

In addition to Owen's musical adventures with Kaiser, he is also co-owner of the East Bay Vivarium (in Berkeley), the largest reptile house west of the Mississippi and is an avid record collector with more than 14,000 LP's in his collection. On this episode, Owen brought a few records sharing some of his biggest influences and a few super rare gems. Hey, let's pop!

Show #40: Driving, Bo Diddley, and tortured hippie dreams
Lordy, Lordy. Show number forty! The nights are getting longer and we're reaching the peak of Indian Summer. On this day a perfect crescent moon hung on, low in the sky, due west. Once I crossed the bay bridge that evening, the moon disappeared behind a blanket of fog. Typical, San Francisco. So long, September.

Show #39: Feelings with Chuck Prophet and John Murry
Look out, Ladies. And Gents. Wax! Crackle! Pop! presents the tortured bro affair that is between Chuck Prophet and John Murry. For the first time in W!C!P! history (and probably the last) we opened up the phone lines as Chuck and John really wanted to hear from you, dear listeners. Risks were taken, advice was given, and feelings were hurt. We even managed to play some tunes too. Not for the faint hearted or those sensitive to the touch!

Show #38: September Sides
September 14, 2014 10:00pm

Wax Crackle Pop
Show #38: September Sides
September brings us Bay Areans an interesting twist in the seasonal conundrum that much of California is used to. As the days are getting shorter, the fog tends to subside and Bay Area water is still too cool, yet calm. This is what’s coined as “Indian Summer”. Summer weather is never better here, however for many us, Sept. means fall. Our minds are engaged for another shift, school is back in session yet, the outside is calling. Evening daylight is fleeting and we just want to hold on to that summer feeling a bit longer . . . sometimes music helps.

Show #37: Dreamin' & Spielin' with Mike Watt
There aren't a lot of guys in punk rock (or rock & roll, period) who appear to have their feet more squarely on the ground than Mike Watt, who in his own regular-guy way has been the heart, soul and conscience of the music ever since his days playing bass in the Minutemen. A musical team player who lives by the notion of "jamming econo" (living and touring frugally, with an eye on the music rather than the trappings), Watt took some time out to converse with DJ Jim G about bass, Pedro, D Boon, The Stooges, opera and his latest project, with fellow musicians Stefano Pilia and Andrea Belfi, in the more experimental post-rock power trio Il Sogno Del Marinaio.

Show #36: Below us, ROCK! And behold, it's power to roll.
After the bay area woke up (3:30 am local time) to the biggest quake felt in 25 years, people were quickly reminded how we "Californians" still live in a volatile area. Despite the tech industry's cultural bulldozering approach to SF or the on going drought that is slowly paralyzing our resources, Mother Earth is awake underneath and will have the last word. (not) An Irwin Allen production.

Show #35: New emotions
Dear listeners, we're at our midway point through August as summer's exit beckons. Lots of mixed feelings as we march forward into fall, losing San Francisco's (and the world's) beloved Robin Williams. Infamous Candlestick Park has now signed up for detonation, but not without an amazing concert there by Sir Paul McCartney first to bid adieu; almost 48 years to the day when The Beatles played their last public concert there. Hark! Fall is around the corner. The best time to be by the bay.

Show #33 1/3: Long Play Microgroove
Hey! It's our 33rd show, so let's kick it up one-third of a notch, eh? After all we're here to play you RECORDS. The LP (Long Play), or 33 1⁄3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, is a format for phonograph (gramophone) records, an analog sound storage medium. Introduced by Columbia Records in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. Apart from relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound capability, it has remained the standard format for vinyl albums.
