Hell's Kitchen Radio #444: To Death Do Us ROCK!
July 19, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #444: To Death Do Us ROCK!
I saw a meme the other day that made some comment about paying attention to those who are introducing new music into your life. Yes, please do. I also read something a while ago about once you reach the age of 30-something you stick with the music that made the most impact on you, sometime in your teens to 20s. Really? That's it? Some crappy, lowest-common-denominator non-offensive music that plays over and over on your favorite radio station, or Spotify playlist? What do you do when Spotify tries to suggest something new to you? Do you swipe left...or right? I wouldn't know;

I don't have Spotify. Are you shocked by this new found knowledge? Did you think I got all of my musical inspiration from what Spotify suggests to me? I listen to radio. Non-commercial radio to be exact. KFJC, KALX, KPOO, KALW (on the weekends), WFMU, KPFA (especially Wednesdays 8-10pm). And I listen with Shazam close at hand.

There are times I have stopped the car so I can Shazam a track. How much do you love this app? However there are times when it's stumped. That's mostly when I'm listening to KFJC, the station that stumps Shazam! HA! That's when I call them up and ask them what the hell that just was that blew my mind?!?!?!

I don't think I stumped Shazam tonight, but I gave it the old internet radio try. My buddy Eric came by the house today with his bass and we rocked out to GFY, along with some other Amyl, Stooges, Flat Earthers, Butthole Surfers and Oh Sees tunes. That was super fun. I really need to get loud like that more often. So let's start with some Amyl and the Sniffers, shall we? There's also new music from David McMurray, Paul Leary, Angel Bat Dawid, and Kate Vargas. Also, Mudhoney's 30th anniversary remaster of Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge arrived on Monday, so I threw that in for good measure. Or good fudge.

There's something for everyone here, even you who still listen to the same music you've been listening to since high school. Don't be afraid. Dive right in. If you don't like what you hear, just wait 3-7 minutes and check out the next tune.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #443: Bad For The Hell Of It
July 12, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #443: Bad For The Hell Of It
I was told by a dear friend that I'm not a bad guy, I'm just not all that good either. HA! I love it! That's Hell for ya. I'm just pretty good at being pretty bad. And I enjoy laughing at that, and myself, often. I birthed John Hell in August 1994, when I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man. I'm sure I wrote about this somewhere else on this blog. We were all KFJC DJs and I didn't want to use my airname, Reverend Dah Wave, for the event in the desert. So I needed another moniker.

I had seen the Rowdy Roddy Piper film "Hell Comes to Frogtown", a post-apocalyptic tale about a guy who survived the devastation and now needs to save all of these extremely hot women (of course), being held in captivity by the Frog King. I love Rowdy Roddy Piper. He was always my favorite wrestler. Pipers Pit was the best part of WWF on Saturday afternoons. And "They Live" will always be a classic. "I've come to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum". I mean, come on! Anyway, I thought Piper's name in "Hell Comes To Frogtown" was John Hell. And I thought "Hell YES!", what an excellent name for RFBM. Ends up his name was Frank Hell. That's super lame. No. So John Hell it was and it shall remain, even if Discovery Channel decided it was to adult for their precious little cable outlet and changed it to "Helle" for the four hour "Power Tool Drag Races" special. Whatever, I got paid.

Initially I was thinking Hell would be all in your face; especially for Burning Man. I was purposely insulting to the organization, just to keep them honest. Now that John Hell about to turn 27(?!?!?!?!) he's much more reserved and sly. I like to poke fun in a more political manner, and to myself. Just what you've come to know and love. You do love me, don't you? (crickets)

As for this show, lot's of new music, Kate Vargas, the Scientists, Angel Bat Dawid, Gojira, Negativland, and Oh Sees. And everything else is gravy.

Also, you get a treat, one of my oldest and greatest friends is about to start a brand new show Wednesday's 10-midnight (Pacific) on Radio Valencia. His moniker is The Alchemist. The show is a mouthful: Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour! The Alchemist is a walking musical encyclopedia. I know you're going to dig his show. He took over a couple sets in the second hour of this show. I marked it so you know. You're welcome.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #442: Looking Right Through You
I'm really feeling this new studio of ours. It's like I've grown wings! I'm giddy, I tell ya! GIDDY! Another diverse show, full of multiple genres that might just give you whiplash. But it's the kind of pain that you like. You like pain, right?

Joni Mitchell released "Blue" 50 years ago, so you know I have to celebrate the genius of Joni. There's new music from Mr. Bungle, and Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers. I also have a set focused on my new obsession, The Fall. Seriously, what took me so long?

There punk, blues, synth-cumbia, underground hip-hop, stoner metal, and The Beatles! This is why you tune in to Radio Valencia.

Speaking of Radio Valencia, if you live in or near San Francisco, we're looking for a few good show hosts.

Have you ever said to yourself "I can program a better radio show than that idiot". If so, then Radio Valencia may be right for you! We are a freeform internet radio station located in the heart of the Mission District, with a storefront location looking for music lovers like yourself, who want to host a two hour show once a week.

No radio experience is necessary. Hire for personality, train for skill.

Take a look at the home page at https://radiovalencia.fm and click on the "Contact Us" link half way down on the right side of the page. Let us know what you want to do and we'll be in touch faster than it takes to segue from one Minutemen song to the next.

Enjoy.

The illist villain to strike to turntable crew is coming straight at you once again, for your face, and your earholes. Better get ready, better get set, 'cause you thought you saw something, YET, Hell is in the hizzzhouse!!!

OK, I got that out of my system. Thanks.

Another Monday back in our new studio, and I'm getting used to the groove. This show is a wee bit different where the mic breaks are concerned. You'll have to give it a listen and let me know what you think. Don't be shy about leaving a comment.

Lots of new music, and almost all on vinyl this week. I realized that over the past 18 months, streaming from home, where I couldn't access my vinyl, that I have a heap load of great music on my hard drives. I wasn't about to keep that to myself.

I'm looking forward to getting some guests in the studio to interview soon. I already have my wish list, so stay tuned.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #440: Studio Bound
532 days. That's how long it had been since I had the pleasure of broadcasting from a radio studio. That finally came to an end Monday night as I entered the new home of Radio Valencia, now a storefront location deep in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco.

Granted, there is work to do. We have a new mural by Alan Forbes that we need to get up, signage needs to be added on the front, new furniture purchased, and art hung on the walls, but I can tell you this is the place that I've dreamed about for decades. Really, decades. Have you ever seen the show "Northern Exposure"? Then you know.
We have dreams of looking similar to the former East Village Radio.

As for the show, it was all vinyl. I haven't had the pleasure to host an all-vinyl show since December 2019. I never hooked my laptop up to my stereo. I don't even think I can.

All of the music I played tonight was music I purchased during COVID. I didn't have enough time to play everything I brought, so next week might be more of the same. Oh boo hoo!

Of course I started with Melvins.

You're welcome.

Please forgive any technical issues, like over modulating, I'm getting used to the setup.

Enjoy. I can't wait to host you all!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #439: Looks Like I'm Fixin' To DJ Rag
May 31, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #439: Looks Like I'm Fixin' To DJ Rag
It's Memorial Day, so I'm going to honor the troops (of whom I have many as friends and former students) by sticking it to the man! I'm a strong believer in a strong defense. But I am not much for spreading Democracy around the world. I think we ought to practice what we preach, and allow nations to self-actualize as much as possible. We butt our heads (and arms) into other nation's biz a wee bit much over the years. And too many of our men and women in uniform have paid the ultimate price. I have no problem flipping the bird to the politicians who put our sons and daughters into harms way for the prize of land, labor, markets and other resources. I have yet to hear of one war we have been involved in that, at the heart of it, was about caring for human suffering. If we can't reap some reward, we aren't going in. Remember Rwanda?

I believe to the depth of my being, if our nation cared so much about our vets, they wouldn't make up 50% of the nation's homeless population. Let's put as much effort as we do preparing them for battle, into preparing them for coming home.

So here ya go. Two hours of stickin' it to the man.

Enjoy and thank a veteran today.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #438: Happy 80th Birthday, Bob Dylan
May 24, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #438: Happy 80th Birthday, Bob Dylan
I was about 12 or 13, laying in my bed on a weekend morning, listening to my clock radio, set to KFOG 104.5FM, when it was worth listening to. This song came on that hypnotized me; it's the only way to describe it, really. I was paralyzed. I could not move, and my ears did not want that song to release me from its spell. When the song ended, I knew I had stumbled across some kind of magic. I had to know what that was? Who that was? And what else awaited me?

The song, "Stuck Inside of Mobile (with the Memphis Blues Again) took me on a journey that keeps showing itself in greater and more dynamic ways over 35 years later. Bob Dylan showed me that there is more to music than what shows up on the music directors list of approved songs. It's possible this was the song that propelled me deeper into my love of the art of radio?
I think I had my dad take me to Rasputin Records in Pleasant Hill so I could buy whatever record that song is on. I couldn't locate Blond on Blond that day, but I did come home with the next best thing, Highway 61 Revisited. I swear I wore that copy out in a matter of months. I felt that I had discovered this deep secret: brilliant music can be longer than 2:50 long.

Mind. Blown.

Along my musical journey, discovering the joy of so many great artists across numerous genres, I have always gravitated back to Dylan. How many people have said this? How many essays have been written about the man and his lyrics, not to mention the myth of BOB DYLAN? I like not being able to separate fact from fiction when it comes to his persona. I don't care to know the "real" Bob Dylan, when the shaman is much more interesting. And isn't that really what he's going for anyway?
Now, if I could just travel back to that innocent 12 year old version of me laying in bed being woken by the brilliance of Dylan, just for one moment.

I've been asked countless time what my favorite Dylan album is, and I have to go with "Blood on the Tracks". It's a summation of everything that came before, in terms of his prose. And it's filled with emotion regarding the end of his marriage. You can feel his heart in every beat. All of his albums come close, but this one really does it for me.

What's your favorite Dylan album? Leave a comment, and please share this with all of your Dylan-loving friends.

I merely scratched the surface with this show.
If you missed my 6-8PM live bootleg show, you can catch it by going here. I played the 90 minute "Judas" show from May 17, 1966, followed up with a few tracks from the 1975/1976 Rolling Thunder tour, and a track from the 1986 Dylan/Petty tour.

So much Bob Dylan for your earholes!!!

If you're looking for some reading material that'll fill up an afternoon, Rolling Stone has opened up their archives of many (all?) their Bob Dylan reviews and interviews.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #437: I'm Your DJ
May 17, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #437: I'm Your DJ
There are times that I really want to send a sternly written letter to some commercial radio station, reminding them of the disservice they are doing to their listeners. It's almost as if they are some junkie pushing tainted drugs. The user doesn't even know there are quality drugs down to the left end of town (or in most cases left end of the dial). In this case on the left end of the internet.

But why write a letter when I can just share this show, right? Should I send this show off to the program directors of the top commercial stations so they can see how much better they can be (that sounds pretty egotistical, and I didn't even need to reread it), or shall I just go to where their listeners hang out and offer them a better bang for the buck.

Allow me to bang you. Bang you all.

It was tax day on Monday, so there are a few tunes that fit some kind of money theme, but other than that, I'm all over the place in a good way. I even improvise a bit more than usual and through in the 23 minute epic, "Echoes", by Pink Floyd. It's the greatest version you have ever heard. Tune in to find out why. I'm also falling in love with Mike Krol. This guy...sheesh!

I've been pulling out a number of anniversary box sets lately. CSN&Y, Ray Charles, The Who. I have new Ty Segall later in the show that will kick your ass. And that's what you want in a radio station, shows that will kick your ass in ways you didn't know you needed.

Radio Valencia is here to kick your ass in all the best ways.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #435: Get On The Good Foot - James Brown Birthday Special
It's James Brown's birthday. Whatever you're doing isn't better than what I'm playing for the next four hours. Get on the good foot, I'm starting out with two hours of live JB throughout the years, then two hours of studio selections from across his illustrious career, focusing on my favorite era 1968 - 1975.

I was lucky to have seen the Hardest Working Man in Show Business perform live three times, and each was better than the previous. I was also honored to have interviewed him in 1992 (or was it 1993?) soon after he got out of prison, during my Friday 10am-2pm jazz, soul, funk show on KFJC, Temple of the Bird. He graciously offered my 15 minutes to talk about his music and not to bring up prison, women, or drugs. Thanks James.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #434: Hello/Goodbye Special
April 26, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #434: Hello/Goodbye Special
Hosting a special is always a treat. I like the work once I'm inspired. A few weeks ago this "Hello/Goodbye" idea popped into my head. It's not very original, but it's what you do with it that counts. How would you fill a two hour show of only songs that have the theme in the title, or are obviously about the theme?

I need to thank my buddy Michael for a few suggestions as well as many of the KALX staffers for throwing a few hundred titles my way. Wow! It's an embarrassment of riches. I only have two hours to fill, so I wanted hour one to be the "Hello" theme, and hour two to close it out with the "Goodbye" theme. I opened and closed with Cheap Trick: "Hello There" and Auf Wiedersehen". To segue from one to the other, I used the over-obvious Beatles tune "Hello/Goodbye".

During my research I discovered there are countless songs about goodbye. It makes for a more emotional tale, than a song featuring a greeting. That being said, I think I represented both salutations well. You be the judge.

Next week it'll be mostly new music, and we're getting closer to being in our new studio on 22nd Street in San Francisco. Let the excitement commence!

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #433: Born Secular
A night with nothing to prove. After last week's country/americana show, I feel like I needed to cleanse myself with a variety of genres. That's the usual as you may know. There's lots of music that's new to you on here. Ace of Cups first ever release (2018), Joe Strummer compilation, prank phone calls to religious radio stations, Ethiopian jazz master, Chilean psych, Irish neo-folk, the king of Be-bop, a rediscovered folk gem, rumbling guitar, punk, funk, and junk.

See how far I go for you?

In the weeks to come I'm planning a few specials: Hello/Goodbye, days of the week, time of day, and a multi-part special on John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees, Oh Sees, OCS, Damaged Bug, Yikes, Coachwhips and many more bands.

So much to look forward to, coming up Monday's 8-10PM Pacific on Radio Valencia.

And don't forget about John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza, Monday's 6-8PM Pacific, where I pull full shows from my vast live bootleg collection. Take a look at this blog for previous shows. Tune in every Monday to see what I have planned.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #432: Not Forever, Just For Now
There's something about hosting a thematic special that really gets the juices flowing. I don't know if this was really a special, but I stuck with one genre for the most part on this show. My fabulous daughter, Little Lauson Hell tells me she doesn't like Country music. To which I respond, you just haven't really heard good Country music. Like anyone with musical taste, commercial anything is usually crap, that's goes double for Country, but there have been some real treats in the history of this genre. I merely scratched the surface by playing some of my favorite artists. And it's not hit-heavy as you will see.

And I didn't program this show chronologically. So there.

I hope you find some treats in here. That's the plan, right?

Hell's Kitchen Radio #431: The Right String But The Wrong Yoyo

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #431: The Right String But The Wrong Yoyo
How has time changed for you over the past year? Some days, when I'm busy teaching, grading, cleaning up the Hellhole, and caring for the Hell spawn, it seems to fly right by, leaving me wonder where the Hell all this free time is? Then there are days when I fell it drag right along, as if the seconds are actually ticking backwards. What are we going to remember about this time a decade from now? Is there anything you have been putting off that you really need to get to before we all head back out into the world we think we knew? How do you want to approach the post-pandemic world? Will you rush back in, jumping at the chance to go everywhere and see everyone? Or are you going to slowly ease in, keeping your mask on deep into 2021, and quietly judging anyone who has the gall to walk around without a mask?

What's it going to be?

I received my two Pfizer vaccinations a few weeks back, with no side effect besides a minor soreness at the injection site, and I'm keeping my mask on until we're given the go ahead to take it off. I don't want to be the guy who can't get sick, but carries the virus and gets others sick. Not on my watch!

Since San Francisco is moving closer to the yellow tier, this means that Radio Valencia is getting closer to opening our new studio at 3227 22nd Street. This is a storefront location, and I cannot wait to start broadcasting my show live from there. I hunger for the energy of our own studio once again, interviewing people, getting loud, and letting my hair down. Don't get me wrong, the concept of doing my show from my bedroom is oh so much fun, but being reminded that it's Bodhi's bedtime, and not to talk so loudly is really putting a crimp in my style. KnowWhatIMean?

That being said, I'm really excited about this recent show of mine. I was off last week, so I had a lot of music saved up to share with you all. I think I painted the scene nicely. You let me know what you think. Feel free to leave a comment, and thanks for all those who chatted me up this past Monday night. Keep it comin'.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #430: It's A Ripoff

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #430: It's A Ripoff
I'm taking too much time thinking about how to describe this show. It shouldn't take this long. It should just flow, you know? The show flowed well. I had been listening to a lot of compilations during the week leading up to the show, so a lot of what you hear are from a few that stood out.

I don't look at compilations for songs that have been previously released. Sometimes the joy of a good comp is that rare track, the alternative take (some of which is obvious why it was never released in the first place), guest musicians, and the such.

I enjoy covers a lot, and if you tune in regularly you're aware of this. There are times when I dig deep for the original; much of the time it's an old blues take.

There are no fewer than ten covers tonight, and a few alternate and rare takes thrown in too. Check out the Richard Hell set, featuring his early days with Tom Verlaine (Neon Boys and Television). He also recorded a record with Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth: Dim Stars.

Check out the birthday tribute to Phil Lesh, who turned 81 on Monday, featuring a cavalcade of "stars" covering a rarely played Grateful Dead tune, "Unbroken Chain". I posted the video from this session at the bottom of this post. It's well worth the listen and the viewing.

There's also a birthday tribute to Sly Stone who turned 78 on Monday.

I could go on and on about the sets I played, but I think you're here for the music. In a rare twist, there aren't any new releases in this show. Next week I'll throw down some new music for you dig.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #429: International Women's Day

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #429: International Women's Day
I always like the response to the question asked to late Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, when she was asked how many women on the high court would satisfy here? Her response: 9. I love that. There were 9 men between 1789 - 1981 when Sandra Day O'Conner was appointed. Isn't it time for a high court full of women?

Women are rising to greater heights in government, academia and industry, and of course some of the most amazing singers and musicians throughout history have been women. Tonight it's all about some of my favorite women. Most are female-fronted bands, but there are many all-women groups here, solo artists, and a few duets peppered in for good measure.

Spread this show far and wide.

Have you tuned into my Monday night Live Bootleg Bonanza? Monday's 6-8PM Pacific I dig into my live bootleg library and play a full show or two from the hundreds of bands I have shows from. Take a look at my full blog and scroll down for the past shows I've played. https://hellskitchenradio.blogspot.com

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #428: Sold To Hell

Hell's Kitchen Radio #428: Sold To Hell
Well damn if that wasn't fun. During the week I'm always listening to music; my own collection and a lot of non-commercial radio: Radio Valencia, KALC and KFJC mostly. Thankfully the Shazam app exists. I cannot tell you how often I use that app. Personally I believe it to be the greatest app ever made in the history of app-kind. Quite possibly it's the greatest invention since the printing press! OK maybe since radio. What do I know?

My point: many of the artists I still get turned onto come from listening to quality radio stations, with hosts who really know their music.

What a time to be quarantined!

I'm hoping we're allowed into our new studio soon. I miss having people to interview from week to week. And we've got these great new digs on 22nd street, right next door to the Make Out Room. I really hope they're able to survive this pandemic. Word came today that the iconic Revolution Cafe has closed their doors, permanently. I would fly my flag at half mast if I had one.

Carrying on, here's a bunch of music that will sweep away the ennui, unless you get off on that kind of sensation? I will never yuck your yum.

Brand new Melvins and Mr. Bungle are in the show, along with a lot of artists I don't think I have ever played on here before. Also some new Iggy Pop where he channels the spirit of a dead Welsh poet. Iggy can gargle salt water and I would still love how it sounds.

I want to start featuring more local independent artists who I know have suffered through COVID-19. I've got some Kate Vargas and her man, Eric McFadden in the second hour. They could always use your love.

See you next Monday starting at 6pm Pacific for my live bootleg bonanza, where I play full live shows from my live bootleg library. This blog has posts from the previous shows so you can take a look at what you missed. Then stick around from 8-10PM Pacific for my two hour music mix Hell's Kitchen Radio.

Enjoy.

Well that was fun. Did you have fun too? No? Then you need to listen to this show again.

I may need to bring back the "set of the week". I am always interested in knowing what you're listening to? What should I be listening to? Turn me on! I don't use Spotify, but I am always happy to go in search of good music.

Are you an artist looking to get played? Send me your music and I'll give it a listen. mrjohnhell@gmail.com

This show has plenty of gems to entertain the most cynical of you all. Most of this recent show sits in the punk and blues genres, but I throw a few other nibblets in there for good measure. Is "nibblet" even a word? It's coming up with the red dashed lines under it, indicating that I have just made up a new word! Good for me!

At this point I'm just filling space. Go away now and enjoy two hours of music you didn't know you needed.

Enjoy.

Well this is embarrassing. I should have had this up for you days ago. I really have no excuse. It's not like I go anywhere. I don't commute anymore. I don't go see people. I don't go to shows, or out to restaurants, or even for many walks. I'm mostly in front of this damnable machine for too many hours a day. Maybe that's why it didn't get done: the lack of motivation?

Maybe.

I love hosting my show every week. I would host a daily show if I had the time to do so. Work and family does take precedent, don't ya know.

But for Monday night I'm all yours. So what do you want to do with me? I'm a glutton for your punishment.

Here's what I have for you.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #425: Black History is American History

Hell's Kitchen Radio #425: Black History is American History
If this show had legs it would have found a few dozen dance moves to throw down. It doesn't have this ability, but don't let that stop you from getting down. Black History Month or not, every one of these artists deserves every award they have won, and many more they hadn't.

You have no excuse but to strap in for a real good time.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War.

We have a lot of work to do.

The second hour has a Bob Marley birthday set. He would have celebrated 76 years last week. Any excuse to play more Bob Marley.

In the meantime, enjoy these two hours. Many genres, all great music.

Enjoy.
