Hell's Kitchen Radio #424: It's Too Late To Change Your Mind
February 1, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #424: It's Too Late To Change Your Mind
What will you do now that the orange cheeto has fallen from grace? I wouldn't bet him out. He loves a good comeback. Will the next season be worth watching? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, take a look at this juicy set I have just for you and yours. There's something here for just about every member of the family. You got your blues for the teens. Stoner metal for grandma. Sexy vocal stylings for your overweight stinky uncle who's missing teeth and hair. There's funk for white neighbor who swears he was Black in a previous life. And anything else that dad enjoys. For mom there's plenty of polyester dance hits to cover the couch.

We all need a creative outlet to get us through these tough times. What's yours? Need one? Just look at the contest I'm throwing and participate. Deadline is Friday, February 12th.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - February 1, 2021 - The Death of Ziggy Stardust
Tonight is all about David Bowie!!! He's five years gone, and it hasn't gotten any easier. Tonight I have one of his absolute best live performances: the FINAL Ziggy Stardust performance. This July 3, 1973 performance is special for that along with the fact that only Bowie knew he would be "killing" Ziggy on this night. Not even his manager or closest friends were aware of this! Going out at the top, indeed. Can you even imagine?

Strap in for one of the finest shows in rock and roll history. It's time for Bowie!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #423: Is It Safe To Come Out Yet?
January 25, 2021 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #423: Is It Safe To Come Out Yet?
Sometimes I have to forgive myself if I'm just not feeling it. You know what I mean? We've been home for over ten months now, and the COVID wall is real, people. It's real! My day starts with my three old son climbing into bed with my wife and me. I'm the one who has the elbows in the face, the knee in the gut, the hot breath up my nose. Most weekdays I get him up, dressed, pack his food, and off to daycare (with very strict protocols for COVID, thank you very much).

Then I come home and get ready to teach. You know I'm a high school teacher, right? Don't even get me started about that. I love my work; it's never dull, but COVID has really put a damper on things. Poor kids. I also have a high school junior in the house: Little Lauson Hell, who you have met on this show many times over the years. I'm actually really proud of her. Her academics remain high, but it's her emotional fortitude that I'm more proud of. She keeps it together better than most adults I know.

As a teacher my work day doesn't really end, but since Mrs. Hell's job is more demanding (corporate work often is, if only because of the threat of the big boss man), I have to go pick up young Mr. Hell from daycare, bring him home, cook for him, and prepare him for bed. The fabulous Mrs and I alternate bedtimes with him, but by the time he lays down I'm spent.

This leaves little space for any downtime.

This is why I look forward to Monday nights with you. It's my only true creative outlet these days. So when I get a late start like I did on this show, it takes the winds out of my sails a wee bit. I brought it back up pretty quickly however, as we setlist below will show. It's the banter that'll keep you coming back (or drive you away in droves).

Dissonance, punk, metal, glam, hip hop, funk, Afro-funk, and more to whet your whistle. Tell 'em John Hell sent you.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #422: The King of Love is On Hold
There are good shows, and then there are shows when I am truly inspired. And tonight was such a night. And I can honestly say it was all about you, the listeners. So many great comments and inspirations. It's like I jump start the show, and then you all chime in, getting me to go farther than I thought I could!?!?

Maybe I'm just excited to be losing 280 pounds on January 20th? I don't know, but this was a fun show to host.

So this is a new dawn, yes? How are you going to approach it? What are going to do differently leading into the next four years? What are your hopes and your fears?

There are so many opportunities standing there in front of us. Let's not lose focus on what makes us great. And let's allow music to be a binding force for good.

Well that was a weird week. Once you think you've seen it all, our President gets impeached a second time. I was really hoping it would be an unanimous vote, but obviously I live in la la land.

Anywho (I hate that colloquialism), you're here for the music, not the commentary. Right? Hmmmm. Maybe you want more commentary. Do you want more commentary? I am a civics teacher, you know?

I offer you my latest, greatest creation: two hours of whatever the hell lit a fire under my butt as the current song was playing. There are some real treats, and a few surprises. And the banter isn't too shabby. I think it flows right on by. You tell me what you think. No one ever leaves comments, except those Q-Anon COVIDiots.

Lest I forget:

Hell's Kitchen Radio #420: Smoke This Show!
Happy New Year, to you all! How did you celebrate the completion of one of the top 10 worst years in the history of our nation? I sat at home and watched the Melvins NYE special. Thanks fellas, that was a hoot!

Tonight was a night of firsts. I have never played Hank III before. Nor have I played Jake Blount (thanks Derlyn!!!), nor has Larry Boothroyd been played on my show as a session leader, though I have played plenty of Victim's Family in the past. And though Buddy Rich has graced these "airwaves", this record with Alla Rakha has never been on, though I look forward to sharing more from all of these artists in the future.

As for what 2021 has in store, it's all about this Georgia special election that's happening on Tuesday. I predict the two Democrats will win by slim margins. I also don't think the GOP candidates will do as well as Trump did. If the two Dems do win, I have to wonder how much sway Trump will have with the House and Senate GOP members with the electoral certification on Wednesday? By the time you are reading this, it'll probably be long over. How close were my predictions?

December 28, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #419: We Finally Made It To The End And All I Got Was This Lousy Virus
The end is nigh. And what are your plans? Are you going to head out and revel with your friends, sans mask, giving hugs, kisses, high fives and COVID to each other, and your beloved Nana upon returning home? Good for you for removing yourself from the gene pool. Unfortunately, you're also risking others just to play around on amateur night.

Stay home, watch a movie, drink a glass of bubbly (alcoholic or non), and head off to bed without anything to regret. We have next year, and all of our loved ones to consider.

Thanks in advance.

This here is my year-end show. There's a bunch of my faves from 2020, but this isn't a "Best of..." show in the least. There's a bunch of other tunes tossed in from across the ages. In retrospect I really should have played "I Want To Be Sedated". Hmmmmm, just pretend I did.

Let's all just agree that 2020 was relatively bad for everyone around the world, and move on, shall we? I mean really now, a pandemic puts everything else into perspective. You had a bad year? Oh, I am so sorry. WE ALL HAD A BAD YEAR. Your year sucked extra special bad? WOW! You must really want to win some award. This show is for you then. And only you.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #418: Trim That Tree
December 21, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #418: Trim That Tree
And we've made it to Christmas Day!!! How the Hell did that happen so quickly? Seriously though, with all of this staying at home crap since March, one would think this year would have crawled by? Time always seemed to flow when I had to commute most days, pay the bills, do the dishes, and repeat. I've been home since mid-March, and December came in like a limping, gasping, clawing gazelle, after having been chewed on and spit out for the rancid meat that COVID and Trump's allies turned 2020 into.

What kind of fresh Hell is this?

So let's stick with this musical lane for the next two hours shall we?

As you will see below the first hour contains a fistful of holiday music that is as off-kilter as yours truly. And isn't that why you tune in in the fist place? The second hour is something else entirely. I really enjoyed the entire show, but the two hours are as different as Christmas is to Hanukkah. Take that for whatever you think it means.

If you live in the Bay Area of California, you really owe it to yourself to take a drive to either Christmas Tree Lane (Thompson Lane) in Alameda, or Chestnut Lights (Woodside Court) in South San Francisco. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the creativity that went into these houses is worth the trip.

Go ho, ho, ho yourself, and I'll see you all next Monday night to get you good and ready to say so long and fuck you to 2020.

If you haven't tuned into my Live Bootleg Bonanza show, tune in Monday's 6-8PM, before my regular Hell's Kitchen show, to check out shows from my vast live vault (it's really just TBs of live shows) of thousands of shows from hundreds of bands. Most are soundboard quality, of varying genres. I played two Frank Zappa shows last week to celebrate what would have been his 80th birthday.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #417: Never Draw Attention To The Mistakes
December 7, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #417: Never Draw Attention To The Mistakes

I'm so pleased that I have this outlet available to me, that on my honor I promise never to phone it in. I gave up my AOL dial up many moons ago.

This show has a lot of date-oriented music associated with it. I won't give away the easter eggs; I just know you want to find them on your own. Feel free to leave a comment.

I'm not certain how Angelisxvi showed up in this set. I have a folder for music I want to play on this show, and somehow it made its way in there. I'm guessing there's a story I have chosen to forget. Or perhaps Little Lauson Hell (who made a brief appearance during this show) snuck it in there?

There are a few artists who are making their debut on Hell's Kitchen Radio: Bad Livers, Timothy Leary, Koko Taylor, Clairo, and yes, Angelisxvi. Why, oh why has it taken me this long to share Bad Livers?!?!?!?! And it's FDR's first appearance as well I believe.

Never forget Pearl Harbor...or The Maine. Though I think it's safe to say 122 years after, The Maine probably was an accident the US Navy used as an excuse to go to war with Spain, the weakest of all the world powers by 1898. Don't get me started.

I think my vote for BEST SET has to go near the end with the set that starts with Electric Masada and ends with James Brown. That was about 20 minutes that will kick you in the groove thang.

You're welcome.

Monday's 6-8pm I've taken over to feature my live bootleg collection. If you tuned in you caught an hour of Mudhoney from 1990 in Australia, followed by an hour from the birthday boy, Tom Waits (71 years young) from 1999. I plan on doing this every Monday until we have a new show in place. Considering I download an average of five shows (from five different artists) a day, not including the Grateful Dead (5+ shows a day from them, alone), it's a toss up what I'm going to share. I like playing more than one artist during that slot, unless it's a tribute. Tune in Monday at 6pm (Pacific) to hear what I have in store. Then stay from 8-10 for my weekly mix.

Thanks for all of your continued support.

I started hosting Monday's 8pm back in 2000 when I joined San Francisco Liberation Radio, moved over to Pirate Cat Radio in July 2007, then to FCCFree Radio (co-founder) in 2008, and then Radio Valencia (co-founder) in 2010. Other than a few short breaks between stations, it's been 20 years in the same slot. That in combination with my nine wonderful years at KFJC (88-97), and this has been a very fulfilling radio dream come true for me. I may need to write more about this later.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #416: The Perennial Annual Annual
November 30, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #416: The Perennial Annual Annual
Each November I choose a year that I want to showcase for two hours. It's a random selection. For my tenth annual Annual Annual I have chosen 1980. I turned 10 that year, and was already enjoying a growing record collection I could call my own. We owned a jukebox stocked with 45s from the 60s and 70s, and my dad always enjoyed having music playing throughout the house. My two older sisters (6 and 8 years older) often had the rock hits of the day playing in their rooms or on our family room stereo.

1980 was a strange year for music. So many subgenres had crept into the aural vernacular by this time. It was no longer just a Jazz, Rock, Soul world. By 1980 Heavy Metal, Funk, Punk, and New Wave had infiltrated the discussion, and there's nothing wrong with that, except commercial radio stations continued to divide us based on their perceived belief that we wanted stations that specialized in one particular genre, and that led to the continuing watering down of quality radio programming.

Thank Yahweh for college radio!

The former and extremely boring KFOG used to have their daily "10 At 10" show that focused on one year at a time, but rarely, if ever, would they take a chance on some of the artist and genres that I feature on this annual special you see before you.

1980 had a lot of tasty bites to offer however. This show showcases a few commercial tunes (yes, I play the #3 most popular song based on Billboard charts. Sue me), as well as some underground morsels I'm sure you'll enjoy chewing on.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #414: Dancin' In The Streets
November 16, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #414: Dancin' In The Streets
I never enjoy missing my show, and last week was going to two hours of some serious celebrating, but family first, last, and always. So there ya go. I saved it all up for this show...kinda. I mean, the polish has sort of worn off, since el douche bag (I won't even capitalize that) won't concede. What a little prince he is.

I admit, the slow burn is fun to watch, but not at the cost of our democracy, which this fool doesn't care a lick for. It's all about the ratings, and possibly because he knows that he's about to have a few indictments handed down within the next year. So long, Donnie. I would really love to see him taken out of the White House in handcuffs, but that's not going to happen, and it really shouldn't end that way for this guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it. It's just not good for the country. The world isn't exactly laughing at us right now as much as looking on with eyes wide and mouth agape.

So I do what I always do when the adulting gets too much, I listen to music. And just take a gander of what I have in store for your next two hours. I want to thank my dear friend, singer/songwriter and all around fabulous human, Adam McKinstosh for throwing a bunch of recommendations my way tonight. Some days I get so overwhelmed with my music library that it helps to have someone else's ears around to lend a hand. Thank you Adam.

New music from FUZZ, Neil Young, and local power trio KnightressM1. There's also a celebration for the 45th anniversary release of Patti Smith's "Horses", and much much more to satisfy even the pickiest listener, including a 16 minute funky/acid-drenched Grateful Dead "Dancin' in the Streets", that's sure to get you shakin' your groove thang until the orange cheeto vacates 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In the meantime, enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #413: So It's Come To This
So here we are, four years later, and another election where we tell ourselves "this is the most important election of our lives". And yet I think it is. Let's go into Tuesday with our hopes held high, regardless of the outcome. No matter who wins we have a lot of work to do. Get involved in this great American experiment. Get to have a working knowledge of the US Constitution, as well as your state Constitution. Know who your elected representatives are and hold them accountable, regularly.

If you're going to be watching the results tonight, please be wary of the "blue mirage". Most mail-in ballots are from Democrats, so it's going to look like Biden is in the lead and will win the state, just to have much of that lead disappear once the election day-cast ballots are counted.

Take a deep breath, it's going to be a long night.

I'm going to be watching North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin. These are the states that can throw the election from one candidate to the other.

There's more I could say about this (and I have to my students), but you're an adult, and you know we have to be patient.

Enjoy the ride.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #412: Are You Ready For This?

Hell's Kitchen Radio #412: Are You Ready For This?
We have two more days until...? I would hate to think back to this day and think it was better then. Ugh. I know how you're feeling; this sucks. And sitting here right now I know that it feels that it's going to get worse if he wins again. And there are ways that it just might.

But it can also be an awakening. More people are voting in this election than in any previous election. Think about that. More votes on local and state propositions. More votes for local and state candidates. And if he wins, there's the possibility that he'll lose the Senate. He'll be more of a lame duck than ever.

Get your ballot in, or yourself to the polls on November 3rd, and be prepared to wait as long as it takes to get your vote in.

Are you a geek for polls? 2016 was a horrible election cycle for polling, but the pollsters swear they learned their lesson. We'll find out, won't we?
.com for a fun little interactive electoral college mapping along with recent polling.

If you want to check in with master polling guru Nate Silver, check out his site FiveThirtyEight.com.

And take every poll with a HUGE grain of salt. And then vote. Vote. Oh yeah, vote. Vote even if you cannot stand Joe Biden, vote for him if you care even an smidge for democracy.

OK, time for music. You need this show in your life. Make the next two hours special.

Enjoy.

This is a quirky show. Just take a look at the play list. I'm all over the place! But that's why you tune in. You just can't put Hellboy in a corner.

You're voting, right? Seriously, I don't care if you have to break out of jail, VOTE! And tell everyone you know to vote. Our democracy is slipping away. You don't want this orange buffoon in charge anymore. He doesn't know and isn't interested in how our institutions work. It would be one thing if he did, and he systematically tore them down, as Republicans will do. This idiot doesn't even know what the Constitution says, and he's proud of it.

Toss him out, November 3rd (well actually January 20th, but I'm not going to split any hairs here).

Take a deep breath and listen to some music.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #410: You Really Get Me
Sometimes taking a week off is great for recharging my creative juices. Radio is an artform. You think you could do this? Well, actually you probably could. It's not brain surgery. If you tune in regularly, then you know that I like mixing up genres, and tonight is a perfect example. Garage, grunge, proto-punk, LA punk, Americana, Experimental, and too many more for my brain to consider right now.

I add some tasty live treats in there for the special sauce, and you get two hours of the finest audio stew your earbuds can handle.

I sprinkle in my share of covers and some local Bay Area faves too! My goodness there's something here for everybody, including your retched GOP uncle. You should really kick him in the head when you get a chance.

Speaking of the election, you are registered aren't you? Get registered, get your ballot, fill it out, and get it in ASAP!!! And sign that damn thing!!!

VOTE!!!!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #409: September Haze
So it's the middle of September, what do you have to show about it? Will another month go by before you get your ass up and finish all those projects you said months ago you would get to? What's your deal?!?!?

September is supposed to feel crisp; the smell of fall in the air. I think it's getting warmer? I also have to remember that I live in the Bay Area and our summer doesn't arrive until now anyway. Here come the warm jets! Let's hope they leave the orange sky out of it.

I celebrate my birthday month during the first hour with songs of September. Some are even hits!!! Don't tell my boss or they'll take my cool underground radio card away. Check out the live cuts in the first hour: Buster Poindexter??? Big Star???

The second hour is all about the late, great Jimi Hendrix, who passed away 50 years ago on September 18th. I was to pop out of my momma 12 days later on the 30th. That's right, I'm about to hit the big 5-0!!!

It's all good. I'm having too much fun to stop now.

Check out the all-live Jimi Hendrix hour. Sheeeeeeeeeit, you have never heard this stuff, is my guess. I have dozens of amazing Jimi bootlegs. I didn't even scratch the surface. But you knew that already.

Get your guitar God headphones on and enjoy this second hour.

Tomorrow, September 22, is my wedding anniversary. Saucy Hell and I have hit the magical seventh year of matrimony. Where has the time gone. I performed "Kathy's Song" on acoustic guitar, at my wedding reception (making certain not be nervous in front of all the amazing musicians in the room like Eric McFadden and Mark Growden). What a wonderful day and long night that was. I share a story about that night during my show. Be sure to take a listen.

Keep music in your life, it'll help see us through.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #408: Take Me Home
None of this makes sense. We should have been so over prepared for this pandemic that the course the government took would have been ballyhooed as overblown! But nope, not us. We're like a comic book that no one wanted to read anymore. I blame the TV show 24. Remember that show? That's the show that made torturing to get the confession OK. I am not OK with that. I think ever since that show (which was on FOX by the way), our nation started deeper on a path nationalism.

The terrorists have won.

We are a nation ripped apart and polarized like never before in modern history.

We need music now more than ever. We need music to ground us, and to lift us up. We need music to remind us that it's ok to cry and it's ok to laugh. We need to get lost in the music. It's lustful, and it's spiritual. Music can be your lover or your god. It can be both at once. Allow yourself to fall into it.

We need things to look forward to. I look forward to Monday nights at 8pm when I can share a couple of hours with you away from this sick, sad, crazy world. It won't be this way forever, but while it is, look towards the music and remember that you are alive.

Johnny Cash died 17 years ago. Where has the time gone? I open up show with two sets of the Man in Black. He deserves many hours of celebration. I actually hosted a Cash/Cave show a few years ago that you might enjoy. Check it out here.

I close out the show with a tribute to Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals who passed away this past weekend. Thanks for all the love, Toots.

See you Monday at 8.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #407: There Is Power In The Union
September 7, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #407: There Is Power In The Union
This heat is just too much. Plague, fires, and now the heat? What the hell is this about?!?!?! If I believed in God I would think that it's just one huge cosmic joke. And by Wednesday the sky was the color of blood. Where are the frogs?

I wanted to host my annual labor day show, and I was thinking that now with so many office workers working from home, what are they going to do with all of those empty office buildings, like the Salesforce lingham that penetrates the San Francisco sky? I wonder how many homeless people it could house?

And what about all those frontline workers in the grocery stores? Now that we have the world's richest douchebag, Jeff Bezos owning Whole Paycheck, don't you think he can afford to pay them a living wage? I mean, thanks for the banner hanging on the store front telling us how much you care for your workers, but seriously dude, put your money where your mouth is.

And so goes this show. I mix some Labor Day-themed tunes in with few other treats to keep your toes tapping.

Just take a listen to the first daughter, Tiffany Trump (the one Heir Donny-britches forgot he had) singing her autotuned heart out on the dance number "Like A Bird". And then there's our former Attorney General, John Ashcroft, who lost his Missouri governor's bid to a dead guy. True story. He sings a live version of "Let Eagles Soar". To his credit, he didn't need autotune. Watch out Tiffany.

There's some new music from legendary punk vocalist, Alice Bag; something new from the latest acoustic King Buzzo/Trevor Dunn release; new from Japanese power trio Boris, and a whole heap of music that I'm excited to share with you.

I have come to the realization that I have a lot of music. More than I really know what to do with. I guess this is why I host a radio show. I may need two more hours a week though. I'm just getting warmed up after two.

See you this Monday night, 8-10PM (PDST), where I'll be paying tribute to the late, great Toots Hibbert, of Toots and the Maytals, who passed away Saturday, September 11, 2020, from complications with COVID-19. RIP Toots and thanks for the musical memories.

Enjoy,

Hell's Kitchen Radio #406: For Mikl Em
August 31, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #406: For Mikl Em
I've been dreading writing this post. If you're reading this, it means my dear dear friend Michael McElligot aka: Mikl-em has kicked this mortal coil.

He passed away from brain cancer on Sunday, August 30th. 2020. This has hit our community hard. I've known Mikl since 1996 or so, through our mutual admiration of everything SF Cacaphony Society had to offer. We hit every event we could find. It didn't take long until Mikl began producing as many events as he attended.

Mikl was deeply involved in many stage performances at Dark Room Theater on Mission in SF, as well as SF Fringe Fest, Laughing Squid's Tentacle Sessions, Popcorn Anti-Theater, attended many Burning Man events, produced Speechless-SF, and the regular salons featured at Long Now Foundation at Fort Mason in SF.

So many of the best events I attended or were associated with over the past 25 years were partly or mostly colored by Mikl Em. He was the epitome of inclusion. He was the essence of "let's put on a show". He was love and light.

As a teacher I have been told that I teach to infinity, since I don't know where or when my teachings will end. Mikl entertained to infinity. He inspired so many of his friends, and even more who were in the audience.

We were super lucky Mikl chose to join Radio Valencia in our infancy. He started Can Haz DJ the second week we were on the air. He produced 50 shows, and I'm excited that we are currently re-running these shows Saturday's 8-10PM. Please tune in. Mikl was an exceptional DJ, who modeled himself after the legendary BBC-1 DJ, John Peel.

This show before you is a tribute to great musical mind. These are artists that Mikl loved, many of whom he turned me onto. We used to talk music in the most rambling and sensational way, often meandering in a tangential way across genres, and eras, always ending long before we wanted to. Our conversations were always ones for the ages. And now I guess they'll have to be.

He leaves behind his magnificent life-partner, Danielle, who I've known even longer than he. She's a vision of strength in life that has seen her share of challenges. If ever there is a person who is the model character, it is she. We love you, Danielle.

I miss you my dear friend. Thank you for shining such a beautiful light on all of us. I hope wherever you may be that there are songs to fill the air.

Your friend always,

jh
