The Curated Catastrophe - Biblical Bullshit
October 20, 2024 2:00pm

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - Biblical Bullshit
Shey and Malderor left it a bit late as far as deciding on what the show would be about, so they once again went to the Bob Dylan Radio Hour, threw a dart at the board, and ended up with "The Bible." Shey turns out to have rather more knowledge on this subject than Malderor. This episode was also intended as a sort of antidote to last week's smutty-smutty smut-fest. So we get all Biblical and shit. Check out the podcast!

October 13, 2024 2:00pm

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - Drive-Ins, Blacksploitation, and
This was another odd one. Malderor had recently found a vinyl record of oddball wah-wah funk from Drive-In-Theater Trailers, Kung Fu movie credit scenes, and Blacksploitation and "Sexploitation" films. Shey understood that as "porno music", so this show is, um, a bit raunchy. (This was made more awkward because Malderor's mom was apparently tuned in for all of these ribald selections.) Still and yet, if you enjoy the "boom chicka wow-wow" of classic porn music, this show is loaded with things you can enjoy in the privacy of your own home! Check out the podcast!

The Curated Catastrophe - Hot, Hot, Sexy, Hotness.
The Mission is an inescapable hotbox of sweaty miserable heat, and Malderor and Shey are back in the studio to groan about it. At some point the station melts down and it's impossible to tell if the show is still on the air, so an air of resignation fills the room. As do heat-mirages in the middle distance. Good Christ, it's so hot.

The Curated Catastrophe - More Music From Summer Festivals
This week continues the theme of "smaller font" bands on the undercard from this summer's music festivals. Malderor has a bit of a moan about his cracked ribs and his general level of exhaustion from actually working for a living. Shey is unsympathetic.

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - Beautiful Days and Small-Font Festival Bands
In a rare instance of cooperation, Shey and Malderor actually worked from the same theme today. That was "bands playing non-headlining spots at recent festivals." So Shey played a bunch of the opening acts from Outside Lands and the Stern Grove Festival, while Malderor focused on the Beautiful Days Festival, and other festivals around the English countryside. There is also discussion of Malderor's recent adventures in plumbing. Give the podcast a spin now!

The Curated Catastrophe - Vast Oceans Of Psych Rock
Shey and Malderor are back in the studio this week. Shey has an unannounced theme of "Ocean Songs" she failed to share in advance, while Malderor was playing newer bands he never got around to reviewing for POW Magazine, of a psych and international shoegaze bent. There's also a recording of somebody giving their frank opinions of the CVS pharmacy hold-music. Somehow it kinda all works together, except for that one song Shey played. Give the podcast a spin and let us know what you think!

The Curated Catastrophe - A Farewell to DJ Deathwish
This week we lost a person close to the heart of Radio Valencia, to the Sunday afternoon shows in particular, and to the Curated Catastrophe especially. Chris Krohne (aka DJ Deathwish) will be missed. Shey put together some nice tribute segments, while Malderor sort of ignored the elephant in the room with his playlists, and tried to focus on newer releases. But it came together as a nice little memorial episode. Give the podcast a spin below!

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - An American Theme
Shey was on assignment, and Malderor was deeply unprepared. Since it was still the 4th of July holiday weekend, he just went with an "America: Pro and Con" theme for this week's program. It may or may not reflect Malderor's own conflicted feelings about the country of his birth. But mostly it's just slapdash as f_ck. (It also features probably the worst Don McClean "eurodance" remix anybody could imagine.) Give it a spin below!

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - Fake Casey Kasem and the Pre-Rock Era
Malderor finds a random mix-tape (a literal cassette tape) compiled by the sadly departed co-singer of rocksteady greats Hepcat, Greg Lee. It's a bunch of cool tunes from the pre-rock era, which confuses Shey From The Bay slightly, until she got an AI version of Casey Kasem to explain the nuances of the pre-rock era for her and the listeners. Whatever, this episode is weird as hell, focusing on music from before some dude named Elvis Presley hit it big, while also leaning heavily on Artificial Intelligence to explain it all. So, um, give it a download. It totally worked, give or take some jiggling-of-the-wires.

Shey is still on assignment, but Malderor's friend Johnny Blade drops in to spin some vinyl punk rock (on 45rpm!) to promote his DJ gig at the Kilowatt tomorrow, Monday, April 1st. So the first hour is almost all brand-new releases Malderor found for the program this week, and the second half is mostly the tuneful end of old-school punk rock. The Curated Catastrophe - All Vinyl Sunday with Guest Rocker Smooth
March 24, 2024 2:00pm

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - All Vinyl Sunday with Guest Rocker Smooth
Shey is on assignment, but Radio Valencia stalwart Rocker Smooth was in the area and popped in to keep Malderor company. For his part, Malderor brought a crate of random vinyl, incorporating "world music" from Niger, afrobeat, punk, garage, big-beat dance-music, and remixes of some classic reggae tracks. Oh, and there is also straight-up rock & roll. So it's a typical Curated Catastrophe, with no real concern given to "genres" or "formats." Check out the podcast to see how it all hangs together!

Malderor and Dr Junk
The Curated Catastrophe - An Inadvertent St. Patrick's Day Show
Malderor and Shey didn't really plan at St Patrick's Day show, but thats what ended up happening. So it starts out with some new releases, but then pivots to ye olde reels and jigs from the land of Malderor's forefather's, especially in the second hour. But it's not ALL Irish music. Give the podcast a spin!
