Radio Coyote
Y La Bamba
This week's show features new music Y La Bamba's new EP "Oh February!"

Once again, I smuggle the best new Latin sounds onto the airwaves because every corporate radio station is completely sleeping on these
innovative musicians! You're already a dinosaur Latino Mix!! You've got Mana on the home page and Pitbull
carrying two songs in your top 10? What is this 2004??!!

No! It's 2013 and I've got a kick ass show for you today because I'm featuring brand new music from everybody's favorite mariachi-indie-folk band!

That's right! Portland's own, Y La Bamba, just released a brand new EP last week appropriately titled "Oh February." This follow up to their full length album "Court the Storm" (easily one of my favorite of 2012) was produced
by The Decemberists' Chris Funk and released on the label Tender Loving Empire.

They're starting 2013 off with quite a bang! They've just finished up an east coast tour with The Lumineers, and now they're offering 6 brand new songs of their signature blend of Mexicanismo and Americana
that are sure to bring a little warmth the tail end of your winter.

And, if this is the first you've heard of Y La Bamba then you seriously need to go check out their earlier work!

Bomba Estereo
December 14, 2012 2:00pm

Radio Coyote
Bomba Estereo
This week I feature one of my favorite bands! Coming to you from Bogota, I have new music by Bomba Estereo from their new album Elegancia Tropical.

Comprised of both vocalist Li Saumet and bassist Simon Mejia, Bomba Estereo return with the same raw explosiveness found on their hit album Blow Up but with more maturity in sound, songwriting, and concept. In their new work they manage to achieve an almost perfect balance of Afro-Colombian rhythms like champeta and cumbia with elements of trip-hop, rock, r&b, dancehall, and everything in-between. Now take this sound and top it with the fiery vocals of Li Saumet (whose delivery can be, one minute, so sensual that it's painfully beautiful, then so assertive the next that you can't help but jump around and dance) and you know you've go a winner!

Elegancia Tropical can be purchased on iTunes or anywhere you buy your music!

While you're here, check out the striking video for the lead single "El Alma y El Cuerpo"

This weekâs show features music from Puerto Rican one man band El Medio plus new music by ChocQuibTown, Vicente Gallo, Bengala, and more.
Leo Velazquez, better known as El Medio, is just one of the very talented members in Puerto Rican soundscape band, Balún, whose 2010 chiptune-influenced mini LP Memoria Textil was on the top of many "Best of" lists last year. In his solo work, El Medio seems to focus on just that – solidarity. His recent album El Fin del Sueno del Helicoptero Personal highlights his personal songwriting style with themes that reflect upon his past with an eye on the future. When paired with the orchestral nuances shaped by his lo-fi home studio El Medio successfully creates an intermingling of acoustic instruments and analog synths that is beautifully intimate.

Radio Coyote
This weeks' show features music by Y La Bamba.
Y La Bamba is the brainchild of Luz Elena Mendoza out of Portland who has been building upon her musical heritage of growing up listening to the Mexican folk records of her immigrant parents by blending with the band's other influences to create this vintage-dreamy-folk sound that is captivatingly deep.

Y La Bamba’s subtle yet lush instrumentation is the perfect canvas to showcase Mendoza's richly textured voice and her ability to authentically capture the emotion of her often deeply personal lyrics. They are currently working on their new album, which I’m told is tentatively titled, Tragos Amargos, in honor of Mexican folk-legend Ramon Ayala.

As Y La Bamba continue to explore the depths of their sounds, expect many more good things to come from them in the immediate future.
