In my attempts to be more musically open-minded, Metal has always been the last frontier. Maybe it's because, as a child I was told all the songs were about worshipping Satan -- or because as a teen I was too much of a music snob to give it a chance. In order to bang my head against stereotypes and in honor of the big SLUMMERSLAUGHTER METAL FEST this Thursday at the Regency Ballroom, my childhood amigo and current bandmate Jason McCrarey stops by to co-DJ a special metal set. Jason shares memories of being L.A.-based lead-screamer for MetalBlade Records band SANCTUS, explains the intricacies of extreme metal versus technical talks about why Scandinavians are the emperors of this genre. I also make an on-air pledge to my 8-year-old son that I will do my best to support his decision if he so decides to become a teenaged metalhead.
