THE WITCH OF CöOS,
BY ROBERT FROST, is our main poetic feature during this episode. The story, featuring a walking articulated skeleton (of a murdered adulterous lover) coming up out of its cellar grave in this reminiscence of the titular witch, aided by her adult son, to the visiting narrator, contains much of the elemental darkness not always critically observed in the work of its author, the famed American poet. The dramatic and intensely psychological characterization finally goes, deeply and subtly, into the tragedy of self-betrayal. The scenario is openly incredible as well as, strangely, seemingly plausible. Its tragic, atmospheric story-line, with Gothic enchantment, make the poem engaging. Terror and ordinary talk in its lines are superbly blended. Beginning as an apparent ghost story, it ultimately develops, for the listener, into a remarkable psychological study. We intended it for our Halloween podcast, but it ended up in this one. Also, more on Gulliver's later voyages, among other topics, and the poems of William Allingham. No guests in these three hours, except, of course, the voices of old, enshrined in our ever-present Archival Material. Next door, through it all, the pulsing Disco music on the other side of the wall slammed on unstopped.
