More of the VATHEK narrative includes Nouronihar's seduction, Carathis's evil plan to make of the guileless Gulchenrouz a human sacrifice to her favorite malignant demonic powers-- and the rather surprising revelation that the fifty children thrown to the fiend known only in our text as the Giaour, or Infidel, in a previous episode, were not slain but instead rescued by a roving benevolent Genius (spirit). The beautiful Nouronihar, daughter of the emir Fakreddin, begins to be corrupted by Vathek and is entertained, not horrified, by the deliberate scourging and mutilation of visiting holy sages by Vathek's eunuchs, at his order. What a story, eh? Next week we descend, literally, into the supernatural realm of Eblis himself. And for all who find this tale less than compelling, take heart-- we are almost through with it.
