Hell's Kitchen #221: Double Your Prayers
May 18, 2015 8:00pm
Joining me tonight is Trademark G of Evolution Control Committee (and co-founder of RV) is in the studio for the first time in over 3 years!!! Trademark is the Godfather of the Mashup! That's a good thing, right? I think so. He hosted "Sound of Plaid" on Radio Valencia since our inception back in August 2010, and he promises to be making a comeback soon. We hope so. TM and his bride, Miss Frilly Pants moved back to Columbus, Ohio a few years back, and life just hasn't been the same for us Mashup freaks in da Bay. At least TM finished his masters degree. Way to go, brother!
The music was great tonight, but you really need to listen to his stories, between the tracks. TM is a great storyteller, and WHAT A VOICE! This guy has a real future in radio, if he wants it.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #220: Steal This Show!
May 11, 2015 8:00pm
More of what you have come to expect in Hell's Kitchen tonight. many genres, and you get to hear me call George Bush an asshole. Which Bush? Does it really matter?
I got on a real funky/soul/jazz kick in the first hour. The second hour starts off with a kick ass Terrapin Station from 1977, leading into a live Zappa track I found to be quite appropriate.
New music from Nudity, Father John Misty, Mikal Cronin, and Moon Duo round out the show, along with a lovely little ditty from Pres 43.
I viewed "Montage of Heck" on Sunday night, and I was more impressed than I thought I would be. Not to be a spoiler, but I'm pleased that they didn't go close to investigating why he died. If you're a fan of Nirvana, check out the film. The animation of his journals is well worth the viewing.
Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there. I actually despise Hallmark Holidays, and this one has a colorful history all its own. But if it makes you happy to have a day all to yourself, then good on ya! I would think most mothers would want a day away from their kids on this day. You know: "give me a break!".
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #219: I Feel Naked
May 4, 2015 8:00pm
Some nights I'm not super inspired when I walk into the studio. That doesn't mean I don't want to be on the air. Au contraire, there's nothing I love more. It's more like, I have a ton of music and I'm not certain exactly what I'm going to play and when I'm going to play it. It's a first world problem.
Yesterday was James Brown's birthday, so it was apropos that I threw on some live JB in there. Also it was the third anniversary of the passing of Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys. I cannot believe that it's been three years already. Really, that's just crazy.
There's some new music from Koes Barat, King Tuff, Mikal Cronin, Nudity, White Hills, and Queen Crescent. I do love me some new music. You're going to love it too.
It didn't take long into my first thirty minutes to find my groove. That's the thing about music, once it grabs you, you never want it to let you go.
See you on the radio.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #218: For Your Consideration
April 27, 2015 8:00pm
Radio is an art. I don't care what any of those fascist general managers say, who wouldn't hire me back 2000, even though I already had 12 years experience AND a BA in radio broadcasting, saying that I was "over-qualified", and it's too difficult to "mold" college DJs into the sheep that they need to hawk their wares on the commercial spectrum. Whatever. I'm not bitter, even though my plan was to eventually become a GM, and change the format to be freeform, and actually give the hosts more power in programming decisions, possibly ostracizing the advertiser. It's all good.
I actually thanked the music director from KLLC-AliceFM when she told me that the person I was filling in for was coming back from maternity leave...after a year, and they actually never telling me that I was filling in for anyone. I thanked her for opening my eyes to how absolutely lame commercial radio is. I thanked her for the opportunity to play the music to the lowest common denominator, basically making me some kind of Big Brother to the listener, who will follow my every lead, showing them the light, and teaching them what is, without a doubt, the most important and relevant music of the day. I then proceeded to tell her that in no way would I EVER spend another moment in a commercial radio station studio. I told her that radio is supposed to be an art form. That radio is about the segue. Radio is about challenging the listener. Radio is about finding music that is relevant. Radio is NOT about playing the same song over and over again. I can understand how a child enjoys hearing their favorite song replayed over and over, but similarly how our pallet opens up as we age, first loving milk chocolate, then indulging in dark chocolate, music appreciation should be the same way.
Why are we insulting our listeners? If I hear one more Eagles song, I'm going to shoot myself.
Want to check out what REAL playlist looks like? See below. Take a listen too. There are a few "Easter Eggs" embedded within. Also, I'm starting to mark what I consider to be "BEST SET" of the show, based on song selection and segue.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #217: Turn It Up!
April 20, 2015 8:00pm
I hate being late. I really do. I have this thing about punctuality. I'm a teacher, so that may have something to do with it. That being said, it should not have taken me six days to post this. Take a look at this set! So much for everyone. Are you sharing this with your music-loving friends? You should, they'll thank you for it. And so will I.
Remember, I'm on Radio Valencia every Monday night from 8-10PM.
Also, next Sunday, May 3, I'll be participating once again in the annual James Brown birthday celebration down at KFJC, for their Month of Mayhem. It's a month-long radio special extravaganza! The JB special is 24 hours long, and I promise you'll get your groove on. I'm on 6-10PM Sunday night. Tune in, and DANCE, DANCE DANCE!
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #216: Grab Bag
April 13, 2015 8:00pm
Sometimes it's just fun to go through my library at home and blindly pull some music. That's what tonight was all about. I did play a few requests, and the obligatory amazing Grateful Dead track to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Full disclosure: I signed on for tickets to the Bay Area shows. Let's see how this pans out. I promised, at the beginning of the year, to write about my history listening to and seeing the Dead live. I'll get on that soon. There are some great stories in there.
This Saturday night I'll be spinning at St. Mary's Pub, 3845 Mission Street, in College Park (that's between Bernal Heights and the Excelsior Districts. You know, the neighborhood you never visit, but is totally AWESOME!!! I'll be spinning with the great Tophzilla! He and I used to DJ at the old Anon Salon parties in the 90s. Punk/Funk/Junk from 10-2AM. Come on down and have a pint.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #215: Here Come The Bastards
April 6, 2015 8:00pm
As much as I enjoy interviewing bands, I really enjoy bringing my musician friends into the studio to guest DJ. So it just makes sense that guitar slinger, Eric McFadden guest DJd with me Monday night, and to KICK OUT THE JAMS!!! Eric and I are serious brothers-from-another-mother. When it comes to music we could jam/talk/listen-to/scream at/jump up and down to, and generally appreciate whatever you throw our way. It's kind of ridiculous.
And two hours was not near enough time. The music is awesome, the banter is SICK. This is by far one of my most favorite shows, EVER!
I know you're going to enjoy this one. Please share with music fans everywhere.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #213: Quality Muzac
March 23, 2015 8:00pm
Oh lordy, I brought a lot of music with me tonight. Then I got to the second hour and blew my wad on a 45 minute Grateful Dead jam. It's absolutely AMAZING!!!!
The show starts out with some hip-shaking groove, that I know will get your toes tapping, as well as the aforementioned hips-a-shaking. I've got some brand new music from LA garage/psych rockers, WAND, and a deep cut from the new Moon Duo release as well. FYI, Moon Duo features Ripley Johnson from Wooden Shjips. If you like them, then you're going to like Moon Duo. It's pretty much the same idea. They're playing at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday, March 25th. Hey, that's tomorrow night!!! Go see this show. It also features Once and Future Band, and Carlton Melton. I suggest you ingest some happiness pills, and dance your ass off. You'll probably need to take Thursday off.
The Grateful Dead segment was from a show 41 years ago Monday at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Interestingly enough the Dead also played a show the following year, in 1975, in Golden Gate Park. Take a look at the jam I chose for you. They only played this sequence three other times. All four were performed between late 1973 and early 1974. And it is blissful. The false start on "Playin'" is enough to get your groove on.
So it's groove, garage and Grateful for your night in Hell's Kitchen. That's enough to satisfy even the choosiest mothers.
Enjoy.

Enjoy.

A good mix of rock and jazz and metal and blues tonight. Just take a look at this playlist! I threw some requests in there, and even did a ticket giveaway.
Some new music from Older Sun (thanks Justin) and the Meatbodies; both on 7" vinyl.
The other night I watched "I'm Now", the Mudhoney documentary from 2010. I've always considered this band the most true to the "Seattle sound". I love their "fuck you" attitude.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, how about a Pigpen classic? OK. This Lovelight is about 20 minutes in length, and is super tasty.
I'm sorry this is a week late. I'm on the air tonight. No guests, so that's more music for you!!!
Enjoy.

SEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's how my guests got my attention tonight, and I'm a better man for it. Tora and JonJon from Tiger Honey Pot stopped in the studio tonight to share their amazing new release "Rock and Roll Sex Machine" and talk up their record release party, happening this Saturday night at Benders. The show is only $5, and they are GIVING THE CD AWAY AT THE SHOW!!!
This record is 100% ROCK AND ROLL (emphasis on the SEX). These two make a guitar/drums duo sound like a full on orgy, where the smiles, moaning and hip shaking never cease.
The whole show rocks tonight. They stuck around the entire time, and I had to pull out some show stoppers that hadn't heard before. I think you'll like it too.
Come out to the show. I'll be there. You can buy me a drink, and I'll shake my hips for ya.
Enjoy.

Whoa, I am so sorry this is late. I usually get this out within a day or two following "broadcast". The week has gotten away from me. may of you know that I'm a high school teacher in SF. I cannot tell you how challenging my job can be. I do absolutely love what I do, though. And having the ability to let it all hang loose on Monday nights is such a thrill. I do this all for you.
No guests this week. Started off with some jazz, moved into the garage realm, a deep blues set, then a looooong Dead jam, continuing the 50th anniversary celebration.
And news just in that the great Leonard Nimoy has passed away from COPD at the age of 83 has really taken a toll on my day. I'm certain Radio Valencia DJs, including myself, will be paying homage to him over the next week or so. Please tune in. It's time to get Star Trek on Netflix rollin' for the weekend. My 10 year old daughter will be crushed about his passing. I know that I am.
Take a look at the playlist, stream or download the podcast, and please share this link with anyone you know who enjoys music. Really, share this. It only takes a click.
LLAP my friends.

Hell's Kitchen #208: A Black Eye With Dimples
February 16, 2015 8:00pm
Another night in bliss. Really, this radio thing might just go somewhere (says my 21 year old self). I had my chance to play shitty commercial shlock a long time ago. I worked at KRQR and then at KLLC-Alice FM. Worst. Jobs. EVER! "Here's what you're going to play, and here's what you're going to say. Don't deviate, if you know what's good for you". Oh joy.
Why have I continued to be involved in non-commercial, online, and pirate radio since 1988? I think it's plain to see, or hear, as it may be. Just take a look at the playlist below, and listen to any of my mic breaks. I could never do this on a commercial station. I would have been fired after my first show. And why? I'm not offending many people. I'm not swearing. I'm not any more insulting than your typical morning jock. I'm not anything like them. I host thoughtful interviews with local talent, and I play quality music from many genres. I just don't get it.
Tonight I was feeling a little blue, so we've got that in the mix, along with some country, psych, and a very tasty live Grateful Dead track from 1974. Unlike your local commercial station, there's a little something for everyone. Take a taste, and get satisfied.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #207: Art Of The Segue
February 9, 2015 8:00pm
I refuse to get on my high horse tonight. But if I did, then I would probably talk about the tripe that is the Grammy Awards. Giving awards to those who sell the most records (what am I supposed to call it these days? CDs? MP3s? Digital Download Of The Year (The DOTY?)) to those who only listen to them because, like sheep to the slaughter, the musically and culturally illiterate audience will buy anything they think they'll be accepted for consuming. "Oh please love me, I just LOVE the new (enter name of culturally acceptable artist here)". Makes me want to vomit.
There was a time that I thought I wanted to be a part of this "lowest-common-denominator" crew. I was about five years old then. When I completed my BA in radio broadcast, after 12 years in non-commercial radio, including three years in commercial radio, I still thought that I could make a go of it. I thought that I could make my way up to being a General Manager within 10 years, and from there I'd be able to make programming decisions that pushed the limits. I even worked for a music promotions company, that will go unnamed. My job there was to push Top 100 hits of the day. I used to read "Hits" and "Hitmakers" magazine every day, and call program directors at stations around the country, telling them to give the latest Bobby Brown song a try; or even the new Elton John. ugh. Just take the "S" from the end of those two magazines and put them at the front of the title, and you get a clear idea of what I thought about that time in my life. I hated it when I was doing it, and even now I want to throw up in my mouth a little.
This September will mark my 27th year in radio. Even during my few short years in the commercial world, I was still doing non-commercial and pirate radio. I've continued, all these years, to investigate new artist, regardless of genre. And every show is chock full of many genres. Just look below.
No guests tonight. It's just two hours where I get to paint an aural picture for you and yours. I hope you take the time to give it a listen. The banter isn't blathery, and the segues are smooth. After all, radio is the art of the segue.
There should be an award for that.
Enjoy.

A sweet array of musical treats for your consumption tonight. No bands, just you and me. And just take a look at that playlist! Garage, Jazz, Hip Hop, Punk, Funk, Psych, Avant Garde!!! How does he do it, folks? This is no KFOG lowest-common-denominator-radio.
It's also the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Grateful Dead, so I through down a sweet jam from 1970 in the second hour. I'll be featuring some choice Dead cuts throughout the year, so if that's your thing, tune in during the second hour, and I'll treat you to a tasty treat from time-to-time.
I saw two brilliant shows last week. I had the pleasure of finally seeing my man-crush, Ty Segall, at the Great American Music Hall. I could go on and on about his performance. It was loud and fun, just as I was hoping. I stood front row, center, at the stage, surrounded by a bunch of teenage girls, and a rambunctious pit just behind (and at times ON) me. Three supporting bands, including Wand opened the show. Go see Wand when they're back in town.
Saturday night, I headed up to San Rafael to Terrapin Crossroads (formerly the Seafood Peddler), the home of Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh. His new band, Communion, was playing that night. At 74 years old, there is no slowing him down. They played 4 hours! Seriously, there is no way this should have been possible. This guy was supposed to be dead years ago. What a great band. Fabulous jamming. Wonderful set and setting. If you're into this, then get up there when you have hankering a for jam band dance-fest.
Get out there and support live, local music, and local independent radio.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #205: Happy Toddie Time
January 26, 2015 8:00pm
Tonight on the show I had two, count them, TWO local bands in the studio. In the first hour, Erin, from the Oakland trio The Hot Toddies came by to talk up her band's 10th anniversary show happening this Saturday night at The Fillmore. They're a surf-pop band, with some rather bodacious lyrics. Erin had some fun stories to tell, and I know the upcoming show is going to be a hoot.
In the second hour Rebecca and Mike from Happy Fangs stopped in to talk up their show, also this Saturday night. They're headlining at Rickshaw Stop. Hmmm, which show to go to? If you haven't heard Happy Fangs yet, then you MUST listen to this interview. Rebecca was having nothing of what I was serving up. OUTSTANDING! She served up some delicious Hell to this here host. Their brand spankin' new release, Capricorn, dropped a couple of days ago. Check it out.
I asked both bands a favor. One said maybe, the other a resolute NO!
It's all about supporting live, local music. Stop being boring and go to a show this weekend. I'm going to see my man-crush, Ty Segall at the Great American Music Hall on Thursday night. It's the first time I've ever seen him, and I'm really pretty giddy about this. As much as I really want to get in close, because he's very physical on stage, I also want to be in that sweet spot in the middle of the room. What to do, what to do? On Saturday night, I'm going to miss seeing both of my guests, and head up to Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, to see Phil Lesh's new band Communion. I wonder what they're going to play? Also, this room has got to be the BEST sound room in the Bay Area. And why not? Phil has the money and the musical acumen to create the very best.
Ah, for the love of live music!
Stop being boring, and go have fun.
Enjoy.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #204: Girls and Boys and You
January 19, 2015 8:00pm
Santa Rosa band Girls + Boys join me in the studio tonight. When asked to describe their kind of music, they say folk rock, heavy on the rock. With three guitarists you can understand why they would say that. Bass player Josh, and singer/songwriter Brianna hung out for the night, and proved to not only be a great interview, but also it felt like to long lost friends we're hanging out. You can catch them live at the Make Out Room this Sunday night. I plan on being there, so come say hello. Check out their website for details on how to find their music, and where to see them perform live. They have a lot of shows on the calendar, so you have no excuses. Support live, local music.
Another special guest dropped in unexpectedly: KROB, along with his mother Maggie. Now I've known KROB for about 15 years, and I have never met his mother before. How the hell did we go so long and not actually meet? Regardless, she was a delight and allowed me to interview her. If you know KROB then you really need to listen to this interview.
Check out the playlist below and tune next week as I will have another band in the studio, with tickets to giveaway. A shout out to Elizabeth Simon, from Bourgeois Productions Presents, For sending me all the bands lately. It's much appreciated.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #203: Running With Scissors
January 12, 2015 8:00pm
If you know me, then you know how much I absolutely LOVE supporting local bands. I've interviewed countless artists over the years, and their stories are too much fun. Monday night I was lucky enough to have two members of local indie scene-sters, Scissors for Lefty with me. Bryan and Eric proved to be super friendly, and ready to talk about SfL's roller coaster ride of the past few years. This band is no flash in the pan. They've been supporting act for some heavyweights, including Panic at the Disco, The Sea and Cake, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gang of Four, and Blonde Redhead.
Their third release, Bangs and Lashes, came out last October, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, and it was worth the wait. This record kicks the pop-indie-dance-jump-around-groove right from the start. Bryan and Eric performed a few songs in the studio for us, and told some great road stories, as well as how they are surviving the post-record label world. I love Bryan's voice. It reminds me a bit of a young Brian Ferry. There's a shoegazer sound to them that really gets my toes a-tappin'. I think you'll agree. It was so much fun having them perform in the studio, I can only imagine what they do live. Go see this band before they hit it HUGE. And they are going to hit it HUGE.
Scissors for Lefty are supporting Fritz Montana at the Great American Music Hall this Friday night. Tickets are still available. Go out and support live, local music. You can thank me later.
You can see by the playlist below that Monday night had a pretty sweet mix. Take a listen, and feel free to comment.
This coming Monday I'll be interviewing local band Girls and Boys in the first hour. Tune in.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #202: Grunge vs. BritPop
January 5, 2015 8:00pm
It's All Grunge vs. BritPop tonight on Hell's Kitchen with John Hell and my buddy David.
It's hard to believe that the 90s ended 15 years ago. It's even harder to believe that Grunge started more than 25 years ago. That's just ridiculous to me. What's even more ridiculous to me is that I was in my 20s that long ago. Like many, I too was smitten when I first encountered the early sounds of Grunge and Britpop and Shoegaze, starting around 1989. And who wouldn't you be? The distorted guitar, the pounding rhythms of the drums and the bass, the lyrics so full of angst and Generation X-style miasma. Everyone called us Slackers, but I never saw us like that. There was some serious talent coming out of that time. I remember so many friends being into bands like Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, and of course Pearl Jam. I couldn't stand any of those bands. I remember asking all of them, out of all of these bands that you love so much who will you remember, and which will be played regularly on the radio 20 years from now? I correctly predicted that Nirvana would stand the test of time, and not because they were so brilliant, which I do think that they were, but mostly because they borrowed from heavy hitters, such as the Pixies and the Beatles, and also because Kurt Cobain was really an amazing songwriter.
My favorite band of the time and still in my top five today, is Mudhoney. And why not? What an amazing band. If you know your history, then you know that Mark Arm and Steve Turner only started Mudhoney as a bit of a joke and a side project. They never meant for it to go as far as it has. And though it's hard to see how the Melvins are considered the godfathers of Grunge, I can appreciate their obvious influence on the genre, while still recognizing that there really isn't any grunge in them at all.
As for Britpop, there are a few bands in the genre that I took two. Mostly Swervedriver to be honest. I also like The Vasoline's, and My Bloody Valentine. But I mostly looked at Britpop as a genre that was trying to rip off what was happening in Seattle. I may get hate mail for that, which is fine, but I standby it.
This show reminded me so much of my early days at KFJC. David was a great co-host too! He knows his music. We both soon realized that this is obviously part one in an ongoing series. Listen for David's return in the months to come. He may even take a shot at joining the ranks of great Radio Valencia DJs. Excellent!
Enjoy.
