It's the end of the year, so that means it's time for a Best of 2011 show. There was so much good music this year, that I find it difficult to fit it all into one two-hour show. So this show tonight is part one.

Rock Fight 7, Part 2
December 12, 2011 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Rock Fight 7, Part 2
It's on! John Hell and Rotten Ronnie Donovan go toe to toe, head to head, mano a mano for the 7th installment of the bootleg matchup to end all bootleg matchups: ROCK FIGHT 7!!!

What a great show tonight. And once again, I kicked Ron's ass. Seriously Ron, you really can't play crappy audience recordings and actually think you're going to win?

We were blessed with some special guests in the studio tonight. In the 7 o'clock hour Ralph Spight of Victim's Family and Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine came by to talk about this Sunday's San Francisco Rock Project benefit at Rickshaw Shop. Zeda, a ten year old bassist, and Cody a fifteen year old guitarist joined him to talk about the show. Check out their website for more info. This is a really excellent cause.

Around 9:30 the greatest guitarist you've never heard of, Eric McFadden came in to talk about his new sauce he's been cooking up. Actually, he was talking about a lot of things, including waffles and an apple pie that one first place at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's always such a pleasure to see Eric and Super D. They're on the road so often that one wonders how they feel when they actually have time to relax.

As for the show, you can download it and listen to it at your leisure.

I love interviewing local bands, and tonight I had in a great singer: Xandra Corpora of Con Brio. She likens the band to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, but I think they have a really original sound. Check out the two tracks we played on the show.

Also, next week is Rock Fight 7. See below for details. Rotten Ronnie Donovan phoned in to talk smack, but I put him in his place and hung up.

Tonight, some brand spankin' new Mark Lanegan, which will knock your socks off.

A Season in Hell #63: 1971: It Was A Very Good Year

A Season in Hell
A Season in Hell #63: 1971: It Was A Very Good Year
I've always held a special place in my heart for 1971. I wasn't born in that year. I was born in 1970, but the music from '71 was simply amazing in so many ways. It was that year that we begin to see the emergence of many genres: R&B, Soul, Blues, and Jazz had already been around for a while, but now more genres of Rock n' Roll begin to emerge. This is not your father's Rock n' Roll. Funk, psychedelic, progressive, and ambient genres begin to really showcase themselves at this time. And of course, some truly classic albums (remember albums?) that the classic rock radio stations play too much of, were released that year.

Tonight on A Season in Hell, with John Hell, I play some of my favorite tunes from that great year. Tune in and enjoy. Heck, you can even download the archived show as well, and enjoy it in 2071.

A Season in Hell #62: Talkin' Election Night Blues
Once again it's election time. I tell ya, in San Francisco the freaks come out on Election Night. Per usual I'll be hosting United Educators of San Francisco's and SFUSD Social Studies teacher Ken Tray on my show. This is perhaps the third year in a row that he has co-hosted the pre-election day show with me. We'll be talking about the ballot initiatives as well as the hotly contested mayors race (when isn't it hotly contested in this town?), sheriff's race and DA's race.

I've got lots of election-themed music as well.

Enjoy.

Julie brought the Jenny Kerr band with her to play a few tunes. They'll be playing the opening night reception on Friday night. I really encourage you to take a listen to the podcast of this show, and then head on over there on Friday night. You'll love 'em.

A Season in Hell #57: Hyperextension NEver Felt So Good!
What a great birthday weekend! I spent a fabulous evening with my lady and my darling daughter, then off to Chicken John's book release party. That's always a family reunion. Saturday and Sunday found me dancing it up at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. I love this town. Some great music. Dr. John, Irma Thomas, The Flatlanders, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson, The Mother Hips, Hot Buttered Rum, and Dark Star Orchestra, to name abut a few great acts.

In the midst of enjoying the opening Help->Slip->Music from DSO, I jumped in the air just to come down oddly on my left leg and hyperextend my knee. I've done this before, but this time I saw stars. Dang. I kept on dancing though. Thanks to alcohol, I didn't feel a thing. Today is another story.

I almost didn't do my show, but I was too amped to stay away. A great set follows.

Enjoy.

Fun nights often happen when you least expect it. Tonight I was pleased to have singer/guitarist Pamela Parker in the studio, along with sousaphone player Ed Ivey. They're playing a big show with Eric McFadden this Thursday night at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma. See the above flyer for info. There are lots of fine musicians on the bill.

We tried to call Eric McFadden and Robin Coomer...er, I mean Patsy MacDonald of Shake Well. Neither were around, so you'll have to listen to the message I left on their phone. Funny stuff there.

Second hour features some tasty live material. Check it out.

Enjoy.

I had local band, Boondock Squad in the studio tonight. These young men are making some fresh sounds. Their music has a cause, and reminds me a bit of Rage Against the Machine, but even more relevant. Really! Check 'em out.
