A Season in Hell #48: Radio Valencia: Noise and Education
August 1, 2011 8:00pm
I was walking a friend down Clarion Alley a few weeks ago, when I came across this guy playing “music” on a guitar, plugged into a cassette deck, and running through a small amp. I threw him a Radio Valencia sticker and told him to hit me up. His name is J. Lee and he’s in the studio with me tonight. Wow! I love this town. You can check out his stuff here:

The friend I was walking down the alley happens to be with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), who were in town two weeks ago for their annual education summit, which brings in about 1400 educators from around the nation. I’m a teacher, and I used to teach in a NAF academy. I believe strongly in the need for education reform. I walk the walk. During the conference I had the pleasure of sitting down with some NAF alumni as well as some current 12 graders to discuss how NAF has benefited them. I’ll be playing the interview tonight. If you’re interested in the future of education in America, I suggest you tune in.

July 25, 2011 8:00pm
A few weeks ago I MC'd a fundraiser for Mici Monster, at the Dovre Club on Valencia. She was raising money for AIDS Walk SF. What a great night. We had lots of acts, and a silent auction. I thought it would be fun to auction off a couple of one-hour guest DJ slots on my show.

A Season in Hell #45: Radio Valencia: Space is the Place
July 11, 2011 8:00pm
In honor of the final Space Shuttle launch last week, I'm premiering the song by local musician Ron Rivas, called "Space Shuttle". It's got a early 70's Neil Young feel to it. I like it a lot. I hope you do too. I do a bit of a space theme. Enjoy the Raymond Scott piece. It's from a 1950 kids LP. And then of course there's The Kinks. Because, well, you know, it's The Kinks.
Lots of new music tonight as well. Some India Psychedelic, and new hip-hop from Ghostface Killah, and the Beastie Boys.
Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #44: Radio Valencia: In Chinese the #4 = DEATH
June 27, 2011 8:00pm
A couple of Sundays ago I had the extreme pleasure of attending Songwriters Unplugged over at Yoshi's SF. Songwriters Unplugged is a weekly show, that features a set from three local singer/songwriters. It's a great way for a great venue to support local talent. Radio Valencia then plays the recorded performance on the following Saturday, 4-6pm. Tune in, you'll be glad you did.
Tonight on A Season in Hell, guitarist Jason Cole of Utah Girl came by. I got to see him and his partner Amy MacClain at the Yoshi's show and was thoroughly impressed.
They have a six song EP CD out right now. They're completing their first full length, but need your help. Head on over to Kickstarter to donate to the production-cost-cause.
I play three Utah Girl songs tonight. Check out "Percents".
Enjoy the show.

A Season in Hell #43: Radio Valencia: YOUR Community Resource
June 20, 2011 8:00pm
I co-created Radio Valencia to support local people doing great things for the community. Tonight on the show I interviewed two people who are indeed doing something great, relevant, and desperately needed in our great city by the bay. Shawn O'Shey and Olivia Heart joined me tonight to talk about the Castro Country Club. The CCC is a clean & sober gathering place for all people and a home for the queer recovery community.
They endeavor to be a space where all can seek wisdom, serenity, courage and joy.
Since April 1983, the Castro Country Club has been a safe haven for LGBT people in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Now, the building that has been home to the Castro Country Club for nearly three decades is being sold.

A Season in Hell #42: Rock Fight #6, Part 1
June 13, 2011 6:00pm
Once again it's the night that I show little Rotten Ronnie Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Posters who the real Rock Star is. Me!
Rock Fight 6 runs twice a year: December and June. For four hours Ron and I bombast each other with glorious live bootleg material, both of are avid collectors of. We're a bit obsessed.
I've destroyed Ron the last five times. The show starts at 6, and at the moment it's 5:55 and he's not even here yet. He's been late before; up to an hour, once. It's a sure bet that Ron won't be in his groove until the third hour. Unless of course, if he's drunk, which is what happened in Rock Fight 5. You can hear Rock Fight 5 by going here. Listen to the second half of the show the get an idea of what I mean.
Ok, he showed up at 6:04. Let's get it on!
The plan for tonight is for each of us to play a live cut, one after the other. We try to one-up the other. We're also going to do "Rock Blocks", which will consist of each co-host to do a 20 minute block of music of his choice. We do two blocks each.
To know who played what, note the JH (John Hell) or RD (Ron Donovan) at the end of each track. Also, not only are the tracks and artists listed, but the date of each performance. If you would like more info on the shows we played, please visit http://db.etree.org.
Update: Ron did not get drunk tonight. I have to admit, he may have actually tied me tonight. I'm 5-0-1 after 6 Rock Fights.

A Season in Hell #40: Surfs Up!
May 30, 2011 8:00pm
Summer is almost here, so it's time to get wet. I'm thinking surf/luau music to start off the night. Get your tiki fired up, and wax that board.
Also a fond farewell to Gil Scott-Heron, with a live cut from 78. A great live hour, with some gems from the Grateful Dead, a deep album cut from the Stones, and ended it with a very rare live gem from Pink Floyd from 1970.
Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #38: I'm Your Man
May 16, 2011 8:00pm
The Melvins are in town, and I'm going to the Tuesday show, where they'll be playing all of Stoner Witch and Bullhead. I'll be in heaven even though my name is Hell. I planned a mini-Melvins set tonight. Check it out. Also, the new Beastie Boys is out. I threw that on for good measure.
Here's a link to the show.
Update: I went to the Tuesday night Melvins show at the Great American Music Hall. They opened with Bullhead. Boris was beyond glorious. After a 20+ minute break they returned with a blistering performance of Stoner Witch. If you BitTorrent then I encourage you to DL the Bullhead performance. This is an amazing audience recording, that could be a soundboard.
Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #36: It's Getting Dark in Here, or RIOT for America!
May 2, 2011 8:00pm
If you’re like me, and I know you are, then you love a fine night of stage performance in an intimate setting. Luckily for you San Francisco offers many fine places to indulge in this fetish. You naughty radio listener, you. Anyway, the Mission District has without a doubt, the BEST place to see a stage play, or a bad movie: The Dark Room Theater. Located at 2263 Mission St., between 18th and 19th streets. The Dark Room has been around since 2005, hosting adapted stage performances of classic films such as: The Shining, Caddyshack, Life of Brian, Star Wars, the Ten Commandments (I was the voice of God), many Twilight Zone episodes, original plays like Emperor Norton and Zippy the Pinhead, as well as Sunday nights Bad Movie Night, which features a movie and commentary from three “talented” hosts with mics, but also encourages audience participation. Think MST3K, but way better. They host many sketch comedy groups, as well as stand up comedy too. I love this place. We are so lucky to have The Dark Room in SF.
From their website:
The Dark Room is your one-stop shop for comedy, theater, events, entertainment, rehearsal space and recording studio facilities (both pre- and post-production).
The proprietor of The Dark Room, Jim Fourniadis, will be on my show Monday night, 8-10pm, talking about The Dark Room Theater, as well as his days in the east coast punk band Rats of Unusual Size, where he was the front man and lead guitarist. We’ll play lots of music and talk about lots of great SF underground entertainment history, as well as too many in-jokes you won’t understand. We hope you laugh anyway.
Enjoy it here.

A Season in Hell #34: Shakin' All Over
April 18, 2011 8:00pm
We had a 3.2 earthquake in the Bay Area today. I heard it coming before I felt it. Crazy. I was on the 32nd floor of Embarcadero 1 when the 1989 earthquake hit. We were waving to the Bank of America building, and it was waving back. I worked at KRQR (The Rocker) then. It became Alice 97.3FM. Both station pretty much sucked. My quake story is a humorous on though. Perhaps I'll share it sometime. Not tonight though.

April 11, 2011 8:00pm
So it's International Louie Louie Day. I thought I would pull some of the oddest versions you have never heard. In 1983 KFJC played many, many hours of Louie Louie. There's a book about it somewhere. Richard Berry was born on this date, hence it being International Louie Louie Day. Big thanks to Eric Predoehl for his dedication. You're obsessed, man!
