Hell's Kitchen Radio #386: Doin' The Pandemic Pokey
March 30, 2020 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #386: Doin' The Pandemic Pokey
Hey radio lovers, it's my first official show since December 2019. What I miss?

In all seriousness though, this is a remarkable time. How are you spending your days and nights? Reading those books that have been sitting on the shelf, that you swore you would read if only you had the time to do so? Watching those French Noir films that you once loved in college and realize they haven't aged all that well? Pulling out those dusty puzzle boxes sent to you by grandma when you were 20 (even though you stopped doing puzzles when you were 12)? I actually love a good landscape jigsaw puzzle. How about finally listening to that John Coltrane 45 minute Ascension and the five alternate takes, each 45 minutes to one hour in length? No time like the present.

And the present is all we've got! What would Eckhart Tolle say?

How are tight knit families doing? How is the single-set doing? How are people with horrible roommates doing? How well are you practicing social distancing? FLATTEN THE CURVE OR DIE!

I'm mostly concerned about Tinder. How ever will they survive? Did they get a piece of the stimulus package too? HA! Get it? Tinder? Stimulus? I crack myself up.

On Monday afternoon I put out a call on ye ol' Facebook asking for songs I should play for my triumphant return to Radio Valencia in the pandemic age. The list still hasn't ended. All songs except two are from that list. Thanks a ton!

On a side note, Radio Valencia lost its space last January, after we were told (along with all other tenants) that our landlord had failed to keep up rent payments to the owner. We all were given 48 hours to move out. After a couple of months searching SF for a new space, we finally landed what we believe to be our most ideal studio location yet! And then COVID-19 struck, which is keeping us from setting up the new space. I cannot wait to share details about our new home. It's sooooo exciting.

I have never hosted a show remotely from my home before, so you have heard a lot of reruns from me over the past few months, until Monday night! I'd like to say the show went off without a hitch, but you'll notice the first three minutes is a lot of noise while I scrambled to pay for the Audio Hijack I was using. And later in the show I introduced a Johnny Cash song ("Solitary Man"), which was playing on my laptop, but not on my show. There's a learning curve here, folks. Thanks for sticking with ol' Johnny Hell through all of this.

I would like to thank my brother-from-another-mother Adam McKintosh for donating the Blue Yeti microphone to the cause. Some heroes don't wear capes.

Also, not all songs are from the FB request list. Local violinist, vocalist, and all-around exceptional musician Emily Palen sent me a couple of new tracks from her trio: KnightressM1. I was thrilled to pieces to play "SALT", from their upcoming release, TBA. Check them out live, whenever and wherever that happens in the (hopefully) near future. I love getting turned on...to good new music, and this group really sent me into the stratosphere. I hope you enjoy the track as much as I do. And dig the "lyrics". Perfect timing indeed. It really fit with the show's theme.

OK, enough of me. Take a look at the set list below. There are more hits in this one than I have ever played on my shows before, but fuck it, it's my show, and we're all bored.

Enjoy. Stay inside!!! Go masturbate again.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #385: Living To My Fullerest
December 30, 2019 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #385: Living To My Fullerest
Oh Dougie, you were too big for this world. Where are you now? Are you flying through the ether, looking down on us mortals, laughing from the belly about how silly we all are for crying over your passing? Or are you gone in a blink of an eye, only to live on in our memories?

Father, husband, friend, Franklin Douglas Fuller (November 5, 1962 - December 17, 2019) left us after a short six-month fight with brain cancer. He was the brightest of lights, that drew everyone to him who met him, and even those who had only heard of him wanted to know more. Whether you knew him as Doug, Toad, or even Ouchy the Clown, Doug was always present when he was with you. He made you feel special. He wanted everyone to have a good time, and he went out of his way to make certain that you were made to feel comfortable and welcome, while also pushing every limit you had. Of course Doug wouldn't push any limit of yours that he hadn't already pushed in himself, and found joy in. He was all about joy. Pure, unadulterated joy. He also walked the fine line of giving and not giving a fuck at the same time; all with a smile on his face, and a ready joke at the ready.

I asked Doug to serve papers on my ex-wife a few years back. I can honestly say it was the only time I have ever seen him nervous. He asked me if she was going to pull a knife on him? I think he should have worn clown makeup to the door. At the very least, a clown nose! Our daughters are friends, and his wonderful wife Candace is a close friend of my wife and mine. The memorial on December 30th at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland is what you think of when you imagine the way you want to be remembered. It was a who's-who of the Bay Area prankster scene. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as speaker after speaker came up to say what all of us already knew in our hearts: Doug Fuller lived life to the Fullerest and can never be replaced.

Doug, this show is for you, my dear friend.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #384: One Of The Bad Guys

Hell's Kitchen Radio #384: One Of The Bad Guys
OK, so someone posted this fabulous YouTube clip recently of every sample used in Paul's Boutique (though I think a few are missing), and I of course just had to track down each and every sample, 99 in all. I already had about 60 of the tracks, but the hunt for the remainder has been fun, nevertheless. And you, my dear listener, are the one's to benefit from this scavenger hunt. This is why you tune in, right? Right.

Anyway, I start the second hour with eight tracks used to sample "Egg Man" and then follow it up with said Beastie Boys track. I'll be doing this for each of the tracks on this classic LP in the weeks to come. Tune in and enjoy.

I also took this holiday show to share some longer and stranger tracks as you can see from the playlist below. I picked up a couple of James Brown/JBs LPs this past week, as well as some 80s and 90s punk 7"s . I also close out the show with a few live cuts that I think are worthy for your ears. If you're playing the LDB game (and why would you?) then you better stop following the Abbey Lincoln track. Then again, the Lou Rawls version is my favorite LDB produced.

Happy holidaze and Treason's Greetings to you all.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #383: Do You Like To ROCK?!?!?!
December 9, 2019 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #383: Do You Like To ROCK?!?!?!
I like to rock. I like to do a lot of things. I like to get mellow with some swinging jazz. I like to get deep with some heart-felt blues and soul. I like to get my groove on with some sticky funk. But my go to is guitar-driven, vocals-howlin', drums-poundin' ROCK! I'll be the first to admit I have a tad bit of aggression that builds up from time to time. Instead of taking it out on my loved ones, I prefer to take it out on my music collection.

This show has a lot of rock that helped my through 2019. I don't think I'm going to host a Best of 2019 show, so this one will need to do. Almost all these tracks were released this year. There's also some other tasty treats, including a recent addition to my live music library, that doesn't rock, but certainly soothes.

It's also been a year already since the death of Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, so I not only have a favorite tune of theirs, but a brilliant cover by Le Butcherettes, a band you really must see live.

I'm headed to some record stores this weekend. I can't wait to share what I find on my show next Monday. Tune in!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #382: You're Comped
December 2, 2019 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #382: You're Comped
I have a lot of records. I don't have as much as some, but what I have a like...a lot. I actually donated a few thousand LPs to Radio Valencia about 7 years ago, but turns out most of that music was shlocky 70s and 80s classic rock dreck and no one wanted it. I can't blame them, neither did I. I'm way beyond quantity over quality.

I own about 2000 LPs today of multiple genres. And I purchase 4-8 LPs a month from numerous records stores around the East Bay and San Francisco. I have a rule that whenever I'm going to purchase at least three items, one of those items needs to be of an international variety, and one needs to be a compilation.

Now, there are varieties of comps that one could choose. There are record label "Best of.." comps, artist tribute comps, reissue comps, geographic comps, genre-centered comps, era comps, and rare never released and b-side comps. The latter are my favorites. Clubs have been known to put out comps as well. When crate digging, finding the perfect comp can really make my day.

On this show I feature some real tasty treats from all areas mentioned above. A two hour special only scratches the surface of the music I have (pun intended).

FYI: ONLY TOUCH THE EDGE OF YOUR VINYL. The oils from your fingers will harm the grooves. You have been warned.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #381: 1969 And Feelin' Fine
Oooooooohhhhhh weeeeeeeee It's time for my 9th annual Annual Annual!!!!!

I live for this time of year.

For the ninth consecutive year I'm taking a night to focus on one year that was chock full of tasty tunes. For this show it's all about 1969. Atlanta Music Festival, Woodstock, Altamont, Moon Landing, Nixon!

The final year of a tumultuous decade saw a lot of bands on the wane and a few starting out. The music scene was diverging as proto-punk bands were emerging, while funk and country were defining themselves more succinctly.

As always there is too much in my library to make the perfect two hour show; I merely scratched the surface, which means next week I'll have 1969 left overs to share!

Speaking of left overs, enjoy the week, and care for yourselves and those around you. Let's find a way to treat each other with kindness during this time of insecurity. We deserve better.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #380: Come Sexplore With Me
My first hour features that latest from my live music collection. I cannot believe how much amazing live music I have accessed these past few weeks. If I didn't also purchase vinyl on a semi-weekly basis I would consider hosting an all-bootleg show.

As much as I love playing music for you week-to-non-consecutive-these-days-week, I also really love interviewing guests. I really really enjoy it when the conversation is about sex and relationships. In the second hour of my recent show I was lucky to welcome the host of Sexploration with Monika, Monika Thomas, and clinical sexologist - author - lecturer Francesca Gentille to talk about tantric sex, communication, and a hot show coming up Saturday, November 23rd, that you can get a discount to. Go to SexplorationDinner.com or the tickets and enter HELL10 for a 10% discount.

The show looks detectible, featuring a 5-Course Gourmet dinner in a CATHEDRAL and the theme is sacred sexual exploration... everything from tantra to bondage nuns, with burlesque and bellydancing and a sing-along.

This reminds me, Monday, November 25th I'll be hosting my Ninth annual Annual Annual!!! Two great hours from one year. I'm still not sure what year I'll be playing yet, but you can bet the tunes will NOT be the hits. Tune in Monday night 8-10 to get an earful.

See you on the radio.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #379: Mine All Mine
Radio is my creative outlet. Every week I get a two hour empty canvas on which I can paint tunes that allow the listener to travel to a time and space where they can float, unaware of the responsibilities that lay around them, waiting to be picked up once again following the closing of my show. I hope you have the ability to lay down your weary lists, and just listen for a short time.

We all need to take back some of our precious time. The last thing I want to do is go to my death bed saying "if I only crossed one more item off that list". Now is the time to live, and yes, of course be your responsible self. But may I please request that every Monday night, between 8-10PM you set it all down and pick up a little bit of Hell?

Thanks a ton. I think this show is a perfect example of what I can offer from week to week. I think I'm counting ten distinctive genres spread throughout this playlist. And the second hour has a few live cuts sprinkled in for good effect.

Take a look, take a listen, and join me Monday at 8. You never know what you're going to hear, and I like it like that.

Enjoy.

I do love training a future great DJ. Tonight I had Ruffin the Love Muffin in the studio with me. He's getting ready to take on his own slot, and I get the extreme pleasure to take him through all the paces.

Janis Joplin passed 49 years ago last week, so I felt the need to bring out the goods: a classic live Ball and Chain from 68. This is a Big Mama Thornton cover, so I had to throw in some original Big Mama Mae, doing her dripping hot Hound Dog. Elvis never did it this good.

New music from Kim Gordon, and some other classics that are new to you.

I'm a wee bit behind on posting my shows over the past few months, so I'll be getting those up sporadically over the next few weeks...I hope.

Thanks for the love.

Enjoy.

Do you remember where you were the first time you heard Flipper? For me it wasn't until I joined KFJC in the late 80s. I recall distinctly being disturbed. I couldn't hum along, and the dissonant guitar and driving rhythms left my stomach aching a wee bit. And I wanted more. They were just too hilarious. Songs like "Ha Ha Ha", "Love Canal", and of course, "Sex Bomb" (especially the live version where they ask someone to bring them beer) left me wanting to grab as much Flipper as I could find. That was the problem however, finding Flipper records was not as easy task; even in the Bay Area. Demand outranked supply.

Leading up to their Bay Area shows, celebrating their 40th anniversary (with many years off during that tenure), Flipper-founder/guitarist Ted Falconi, and their current (and 8th) bassist Rachel Thoele stopped into Hell's Kitchen Radio on Radio Valencia Monday night to chat up their many years, many bassists, many tours, and many road stories.

The music runs from the debut, "Generic Flipper" through to their latest EP with sludge stalwarts, and Flipper-influenced, The Melvins, off of their Hot Fish release from Amphetamine Reptile. Thanks to Ted for filling us in on the details. I was unaware that Trevor Dunn was playing bowed bass on a few tracks.

Tickets are still available for their local shows, featuring David Yow of Jesus Lizard on vocals, this Thursday in San Jose at The Ritz, Friday in Sacramento at the Blue Lamp (both 21 and over), and Saturday night's all ages show in SF at the Great American Music Hall, where you'll find yours truly.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #370: DLBs Represent!
Not your average show this week. I welcomed two fabulous friends, Chel and Mel into Hell's Kitchen to share stories from their "Dirty Little Bitch" days. Before you get offended, you should really give it a listen. The future is female!!! Indeed.

I've known these two for quite a while, so I'll admit we get a little roommate radioish at times. Deal with it; the stories are good.

As for the music, it's what you have come to expect, which I hope is to expect the unexpected. My, how cliche of me.

As James Brown said "Get Up, Get On Up!"

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #369: Three Is A Magic Number
Although Radio Valencia as an entity does not identify with a political ideology, we don't censor our DJs when it comes to them voicing what they believe in. When I was involved with San Francisco Liberation Radio (2000-2003), we were very vocal about our stance against the Bush administration and its march to war. We were so loud that it got us shut down by the FCC, with guns blazing. Fun times.

Monday night LawWorksAction.org streamed a 90 minute live reading of parts of the Muller Report, as recited by professional actors. I thought it important that as a show host/producer I have the responsibility to make this available to my listeners. I did not play the program straight through, beginning to end. Instead, I played to ~15 minute sections, peppered through my show.

When is the last time you read the US Constitution? Have you ever read it? Have you ever discussed it? Are you aware that every action that takes place in our nation has a direct connection to this document?

As for the music, it rocks!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #368: I'm Your Captain
Some shows I'm just inspired to dig a little deeper. This is one of those shows. Are you as tired of the commercial radio dreck as I am? And who can blame you, really? They play the same 40-50 songs over and over throughout the day. It's insulting. I don't want to insult you. I want to inspire you.

Leon Redbone passed away a couple of weeks back; the day before Roky Erickson as a matter of fact.

Genres-a-plenty across these two hours, with my ongoing desire to share my recent live show acquisitions with you during the second hour. Some live Bob Dylan from the recent Rolling Thunder Revue 17 disc set, Muddy Waters from 1963, and Grand Funk from 1972 to rock your bones.

Get out and dance this week!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #367: Right Place, Wrong Lunch
It's beginning to feel a lot like 2016 around here. too many fabulous musicians are passing away.

Tonight I offer my tribute to the great Malcolm John Rebennack Jr, better known as Dr. John, The Night Tripper, who passed away at the tender age of 77 on June 6, 2019. Considering he was born and raised in New Orleans with its amazing culture and rich cuisine, and had a heroin addiction until late 1989, it's a wonder he lived as long as he did. We're lucky just to have had him for the time we did.

I start my show with a 30 minute live tribute from a blazing hot show in 1987.

I welcome DJ Doug back into the studio with me tonight. He is starting a new show, Tuesday mornings, midnight-2AM on Radio Valencia. Be sure to tune in. He has excellent musical taste, if I say so myself. I always enjoy training new DJs. DJ Doug is a natural.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #366: You're Gonna Miss Me - Roky Erickson Tribute

Hell's Kitchen Radio #366: You're Gonna Miss Me - Roky Erickson Tribute
Well Roky Erickson died. So there's that. Damn. sigh. What a life he led. Have you seen the documentary of his life, "You're Gonna Miss Me"? No? Go see it now.

I was lucky to have seen Roky perform four times since 1993. The first time I saw him was at the Austin City Music Awards, when he was walked out onto the stage to perform. My mouth was agape as he shuffled onto the stage, timidly, only to belt out three songs in perfect pitch. It made me shudder. The last time I saw him was he final performance, at The Chapel in SF, this past April 20th. I wish I could say he went out on top, but it was a sub-par performance by this legend. Still, it was so wonderful to see him up there sharing his love with the audience.

The first hour of this show focuses on a number of new releases. Support new artist releases!!! I offer links to the new artists below.

The second hour is all about Roky. I have some rare and live treats, as well as some excellent cover versions of Roky solo and 13th Floor Elevator tracks.

There's a lot to enjoy here.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #365: Platters That Matter
There comes a time in every DJ's life when they need to share what they know. Tonight was such a night. There have been many, actually. I welcome DJ Doug into the studio tonight for his first training session. The fella has already got the musical chops, now we need to get him radio-ready. He just threw down some platters that matter in the second hour, while I held down the announcing duties. Color me impressed. He'll be back on my next show to tell what he knows to you and the world.

There's a lot of new music to share with you these days. Isn't there always? You tune in for the newest in new sounds, and the sounds from way downtown. You can depend on Mr. Hell to play for you what you know you need, even if you didn't know you needed it. You can thank me later.

Until then, enjoy.
