Radio Coyote: Predicting The Future - It's Female, Diasporadical & Bruja W/ CHHOTI MAA
November 6, 2015 2:00pm

On today's Radio Coyote, we kick off the show with two tracks from ZZK Record's latest artist release Nicola Cruz paired with some Rafi-EL, Matias Aguayo-led project Rionegro and that new new from El Guincho.

The Genie - who we had for a live in-studio performance recently, have you checked it out? - gave us an exclusive new track featuring Oakland's Aima the Dreamer and Miss Hazel Rose. We also played tracks from Cartagena's tropical bass pioneer Pernett with his new single "Pajaritos," vintage Princess Nokia (who goes by Destiny now), World Hood and some indigenous power songs from A Tribe Called Red - including a new one with Bay Area artist & rapper Kool AD - who had shows in Oakland & San Francisco.

We rocked some parodies - including hearing from Abuela's favorite spiritual advisor Walter Mercado - based on current events like the Trans-Pacific Partnership and #BoycottTrumponSNL because it's cool to care, kids!

We couldn't get enough of the new Santigold single off her upcoming album "99" or Mexican indie-pop reina Carla Morrison's new one, "Un Beso" or Los Angeles' Irene Diaz! We cross the border with Cuban pianist and Quincy Jones protege, Alfredo Rodriguez before our chat with Guanajuato-Born, Oakland-based rapper & educator, CHHOTI MAA.

She and MADlines make Brujalyfe and this Sunday is their inaugural BRUJAS YOU COULDN'T KILL show at The New Parish with WORLD HOOD (Sacramento), SUZI ANALOGUE (Never Normal Records, Brooklyn) , DJ NAMASTE SHAWTY & DJ MUJIE playing the JAMS, BRUJALYFE (MADlines & CHHOTI MAA, HADEEL RAMADAN aka Coca Blu! Radio Coyote: Hagamos El Amor no El Guerra
October 30, 2015 2:00pm

Today we got ovary ratchet and literally turnt with a packed house in the studio! We started off with Colombia's Li Saumet into Bay Area rappers Rocky Rivera & Queens D. Light.

Mission Girls - young girls aged 10 - 14 who threw down harmony raps in the name of Feminine power from after-school program of the same name in the Mission here in San Francisco! Do yourself a favor and check out the video NOW:

We rap attack with Duckwrth, Kap G with TI's ode to walk cops "FLP" and Pharrell's I AM OTHER artist BIA - then got treated to an in-studio impromptu performance from Indigenous Lyricist and Bay Area-based rapper Dio with "Pussy Vortex" into Lakota rapper based in South Dakota, Frank Wahln.

Munchi turn-up hour ensued into the more Dominican avant-garde with MULA and Rita Indiana. Chicano Batman's words on Modernity on KEXP lead into their "Black Lipstick" in-studio performance and back to back Las Cafeteras, who are in town for Dia De Los Muertos sold-out shows at The New Parish.

We end with Brooklyn's Old Money via Dutty Artz label into Rihanna "BBHMM" songwriter, Bibi Bourelii with her debut single, "Ego." Then we close it out with San Francisco skate pioneer and musician, Tommy Guerrero with two new tracks!

October 23, 2015 2:00pm

On today's show, Sweet Jesus and Nati Corazon take it all over the map, locally and globally. We start with Colombia's Mitu and DF's Sotomayor, take it cerebral with Chancha Via Circuito ft. Lido Pimienta, Helado Negro's "Dance Ghost" for Dia de Muertos and Empress Of. Then soulful vibes with Moses Sumney and Roman Gianarthur's incredible Radiohead/D'Angelo ode from his "OK LADY" project. We get lonely with Kaliuchis, show the Bay love with songs by Hazel Rose, Featherload, MADlines - whose "Brujas You Couldn't Kill" event takes place November 15th at The New Parish - and had to play Chingo Bling's "Hot Line Bling" Remix and new hip-hop from Puerto Rico by Velcro. Nati gets nostalgic for New York City with selections from emcee Nani Castle and some contemporary Salsa from Melaza with "De Nueva York." We build Penthouse Clouds with The Internet in anticipation with with their Oakland show, same with Angel Haze and end by premiering new music "Tiempo Pasa" from Sacramento's ritual bass duo, World Hood, who are currently prepping for as-yet-to-be-titled album in 2016! Raise the vibra! Email us: #RadioCoyote

Y La Bamba
February 8, 2013 2:00pm

This week's show features new music Y La Bamba's new EP "Oh February!"

Once again, I smuggle the best new Latin sounds onto the airwaves because every corporate radio station is completely sleeping on these
innovative musicians! You're already a dinosaur Latino Mix!! You've got Mana on the home page and Pitbull
carrying two songs in your top 10? What is this 2004??!!

No! It's 2013 and I've got a kick ass show for you today because I'm featuring brand new music from everybody's favorite mariachi-indie-folk band!

That's right! Portland's own, Y La Bamba, just released a brand new EP last week appropriately titled "Oh February." This follow up to their full length album "Court the Storm" (easily one of my favorite of 2012) was produced
by The Decemberists' Chris Funk and released on the label Tender Loving Empire.

They're starting 2013 off with quite a bang! They've just finished up an east coast tour with The Lumineers, and now they're offering 6 brand new songs of their signature blend of Mexicanismo and Americana
that are sure to bring a little warmth the tail end of your winter.

And, if this is the first you've heard of Y La Bamba then you seriously need to go check out their earlier work!

Bomba Estereo
December 14, 2012 2:00pm

This week I feature one of my favorite bands! Coming to you from Bogota, I have new music by Bomba Estereo from their new album Elegancia Tropical.

Comprised of both vocalist Li Saumet and bassist Simon Mejia, Bomba Estereo return with the same raw explosiveness found on their hit album Blow Up but with more maturity in sound, songwriting, and concept. In their new work they manage to achieve an almost perfect balance of Afro-Colombian rhythms like champeta and cumbia with elements of trip-hop, rock, r&b, dancehall, and everything in-between. Now take this sound and top it with the fiery vocals of Li Saumet (whose delivery can be, one minute, so sensual that it's painfully beautiful, then so assertive the next that you can't help but jump around and dance) and you know you've go a winner!

Elegancia Tropical can be purchased on iTunes or anywhere you buy your music!

While you're here, check out the striking video for the lead single "El Alma y El Cuerpo"

July 13, 2012 2:00pm

This weeks show features music from Puerto Rican one man band El Medio plus new music by ChocQuibTown, Vicente Gallo, Bengala, and more.
April 15, 2011 2:00pm

Leo Velazquez, better known as El Medio, is just one of the very talented members in Puerto Rican soundscape band, Baln, whose 2010 chiptune-influenced mini LP Memoria Textil was on the top of many "Best of" lists last year. In his solo work, El Medio seems to focus on just that solidarity. His recent album El Fin del Sueno del Helicoptero Personal highlights his personal songwriting style with themes that reflect upon his past with an eye on the future. When paired with the orchestral nuances shaped by his lo-fi home studio El Medio successfully creates an intermingling of acoustic instruments and analog synths that is beautifully intimate.

This weeks' show features music by Y La Bamba.
January 7, 2011 1:00pm

Y La Bamba is the brainchild of Luz Elena Mendoza out of Portland who has been building upon her musical heritage of growing up listening to the Mexican folk records of her immigrant parents by blending with the band's other influences to create this vintage-dreamy-folk sound that is captivatingly deep.

Y La Bambas subtle yet lush instrumentation is the perfect canvas to showcase Mendoza's richly textured voice and her ability to authentically capture the emotion of her often deeply personal lyrics. They are currently working on their new album, which Im told is tentatively titled, Tragos Amargos, in honor of Mexican folk-legend Ramon Ayala.

As Y La Bamba continue to explore the depths of their sounds, expect many more good things to come from them in the immediate future.
