Hell's Kitchen Radio #284: No One Ever Listens
December 12, 2016 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #284: No One Ever Listens
Thanks for tuning in every Monday night at 8. I never mention this on the blog, but it's always fun to chat folks up during my show, so please if you're listening take a second to say hi on the Radio Valencia Chatterbox, or if you're a FB friend, then on there.

Another show, another tribute. What's up with this friggin' year? I have done more tributes in this single solitary year than in my first 25+ years in radio, combined! Greg Lake of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame passed from cancer at the age of 69 last weekend. Best known for his days as bassist/vocalist for ELP, he was also a co-founder of the seminal prog-rock band King Crimson, where he performed on the first record and toured for their first two LPs before going on to start ELP alongside the late great Keith Emerson, who died in March of this year, and Carl Palmer who still has a few weeks left before something horrible happens to him. ugh

Much of the first hour is actually down right danceable. There are some seriously funky-ass tracks in here. Do me a favor and get your groove on until it's too late.

The second hour features a dive into my live music vault. And what a vault it is. You know, when I started doing the community radio thing a while back I committed to playing an hour of live music each week. I've sort of slacked off on that one, and for good reason. There are so many great releases I want to play with you week in and week out that the live music thing has had to take a back seat. Well not tonight. Take a look at the second half of the playlist and you can see that it's all over the damn place, and worth every second of your precious time.

I know the world has totally sucked this year. Who will it take next? Alan Thicke? Meredith Baxter (formerly Meredith Baxter-Bernie)? The election will still be with us. Syria will still be with us. Your job will still be with us...er, you. Maybe we just need to put some of this aside and enjoy the music for a little while.

enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #283: We Don't Quit
December 5, 2016 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #283: We Don't Quit
It's far past the time to start talking about affordable event space in the Bay Area. Tonight on the program Ann Atomic joins me in the studio to talk about the devastating fire at the Ghost Ship in Oakland last Friday night. 33 souls have perished in the worst fire in Oakland history. Yes, this was a space that was not up to code. Yes, this was a space not zoned for housing. Yes, the leaseholder will probably be charged with 2nd degree murder. But beyond all of this, we need to take a deeper look at the housing challenges faced by artists in the Bay Area today.

The investigation is just beginning, but we can't just throw around the blame. As the tech boom contiunes it's important that we focus on who is not thriving here: the art community. Imagine if you will a working artist paying $2000 a month on a 1 bedroom apartment, while also having to pay for an artists studio, because if they made their art at home they would be in violation of their lease and could get kicked out. It then makes sense for them to move into their art studio space with other artists even if that violates the lease on the art space. This is close to what happened at Ghost Ship, and what has happened at other art studio spaces in the Bay Area over the past 20 years, while local jurisdictions make it more and more impossible for artists to survive in a nation that no longer prioritizes art at all.

Ann Atomic and I attempt to tackle all this and more on tonight's program.

New music from Ty Segall, Dumb Punts, Mind Rays, Faux Ferocious, Nick Cave, and The Flat Earthers. And the rareist of rare music from Pink Floyd. You have NEVER heard the Floyd like this before, I promise you.

See you on the radio.

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #282: 6th Annual "ANNUAL ANNUAL" - 2006
Way way back in 2011 I had this desire to feature 1971 on my show. What a great year that was for music. This was when bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were still considered young and relevant. Following this show I made an executive decision to annually feature another great year during the month of November. Preparing for this year's show I was eager to share a more recent year with you. 2006 stood out to me even while we were deep in it. Taking a look at the playlist below I think you'll agree.

I didn't get to nearly all the artists and tracks I wanted to play, but this here is smattering of the genius that was 2006.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #281: Two For The Road
November 14, 2016 8:00pm

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #281: Two For The Road
Will this madness of 2016 never end.

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Eric McFadden and his Queen delphine joined me in the studio Monday night to pay tribute to two greats of the music world who recently passed on to the great beyond.

While I was never a big fan of the way Leonard Cohen phrased his own tunes, I was a huge fan of the many covers of his classics. I believe I first was turned onto the brilliant songwriting of Mr. Cohen through the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen version of "Bird on a Wire". I was hooked from that moment on the storytelling and eagerly sought out other covers. Easily my favorite cover of his was "Hallelujah" by the late, great Jeff Buckley. "I'm Your Fan" is a great tribute record to Cohen, which was released in 1991, featuring REM, Nick Cave, The Pixies, and John Cale. Check it out!

Leonard Cohen died November 7th of cancer at the age of 82. I appreciate that he was buried in a simple Jewish ceremony next to his parents in Montreal.

The piano player on the Mad Dogs record was none other than my other featured player for the night: Leon Russell. Russell's stride piano playing and exaggerated vocal style helped him stand out from others during his high profile era of the 1970s. Starting with the Mad Dogs record I spent many hours enjoying his early 70s solo efforts. Though he wasn't as often covered as much as Cohen, Russell made a profound impact on many songwriters that followed him. His birthplace, Tulsa, Oklahoma, named a street after him in 2010. He died this past Sunday after a few years of failing health. He was 74.

Listening to music is supposed to be a joy. Even when the artist we love and respect has passed to the great beyond we have their songs to carry us through to our own old age. I've told my friends and family if I ever get to a point where they have to prop me up in a corner just place some headphones on me and place my iPod on shuffle. Losing Cohen and Russell is indeed sad, but it also will lead to a renaissance of their music. Perhaps your favorite band will cover their songs. Maybe, like after Jerry Garcia died, there will be a huge outpouring of new versions of some of their deeper album cuts that you never knew they wrote. From loss comes inspiration. Through grief comes resilience and vision.

At this writing Mose Allison has passed away at the age of 89. I can't host enough shows to pay tribute to all the musical greats who we have lost this somber year.

Take heart my friends, and hold each other closer. We're going to need all the good love and strength we can muster.

Eric and delphine are performing the next two Fridays and Saturdays for Dark Kabaret at the Great Star Theater in China Town.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #280: Getting Rid of this Clown Act

Hell's Kitchen Radio #280: Getting Rid of this Clown Act
Well....shit. Not really certain what to say. Monday's show featured an interview with a great group of fellas from the band Savage People, promotion this Sunday's first ever SF Punk-Metal Flea Market at the DNA Lounge, 1-8PM. It's free and there are some great vendors scheduled to table the event. You really have to attend. More info here.

The rest of the show was all about the election. You remember the election? It was Tuesday? It was fucking shit. You remember that? Do you remember your dreams? You remember those, right? You remember believing in all of those polls that Nate Silver told us to believe in? I wonder how well he's going to be sleeping from here on out. Truth be told, I truly do not think that Drumpf wants to, nor believes he ever would be elected President. I'm not joking. I really feel that he did everything in his power NOT to be elected. What does that tell you about Clinton and the DNC?

And would Bernie have actually been elected? Who knows.

Here's what I posted on my Facebook wall this morning:

"I want to reevaluate how I'm going to approach the next four years. I want to pay more attention to the things that I love, and the things that I have the power to improve. I want to recommit to the people that I love. I want to hold you all close, closer than ever before. I want to find the beauty in everything, including Trump. I want the best for all of us, while still fighting for what I believe to be the path towards truth. I refuse to live in denial, but I also refuse to wallow in misery, self-doubt, and blaming. I want you there with me. I love you all."

Below is my playlist for election night. It tells a story. See if you can figure out the moral.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #279: Trick AND Treat

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #279: Trick AND Treat
It was a Halloween sPoOkTacUlaR show tonight. I'm not much on holiday themes, but something about this aprticular holiday inspires me to go the extra mile. You can't say that John Hell ever phones it in!

Tonight features some of my favorite spooky treats, along with two new tunes from two of my favorite ladies. Phat Man Dee sent me a track that is perfectly scary as well as apropos for the 2016 election cycle. If you don't get the willies from "Fourth Reich Rising" then perhaps you're dead already. Good for you!

Queen delphine has been building up her stage chops for a couple of years now and this Cramps cover has certainly shown that she's not too shy to put a bug in your ear (oh good lord will the puns ever stop?). "Human Fly" is will put a buzz in your ear and make you think twice before you pull out that can of Raid. Eric McFadden on guitar.

The rest of the show is full of horror movie themes, spooky spoken word, and very dark magic. It's just what Hell ordered.

The holidays are officially upon us, and the election is just days away. Time to run screaming!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #278: Where Are My Manners?
Let's admit it, we need to escape from reality today more than ever before. Amiright? Music might be the only thing that can get us through the next four years. I know we're all really emotional right now. Life is hard. I don't care if you're a high school student suffering from the expectations of your parents and your school, or if you're a 40-something slogging through the doledrums of your 40 hour work week, with the boss breathing down your neck; you need a break.

Consider this program as your respite from a world gone mad.

Sometimes I even surprise myself. There are at least three SETS OF THE NIGHT tonight! If radio is the art of the segue, then you are in for a real treat.

Honestly, this show is easily in my top 10 that I have hosted in the past 28 years.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #277: Music Is My Friend

Hell's Kitchen Radio #277: Music Is My Friend
OK, I've got to be honest with you. After all, you've been here with me, week in, week out for all these long years. How could I ever lie to you? Actually, that's not very difficult seeing how I don't ever actually look you in the eyes, and they say you can really tell if someone is lying to you by looking them straight in their eyes. My older sister used to tell me that my pupils were dilating if I was lying to her. I think that was a lie, come to think of it. Huh.

Anyway, this show was from October 10, 2016 and I never took the time to do a write up and post it. how very rude of me. You take the time to listen to my show, the least I could do is take some time and post the archived podcast of it so you can download or stream it over and over again. I know that you are just dying to have this on your hard drive so you can listen to my voice and choice of music years after the apocalypse. And why not!? Good for you!

So it may already be April 2017, but damnit this show is just too good NOT to share! I can't recall what I spoke about on this night, but looking at the playlist below it looks pretty tasty.

By the way, I have plenty of other shows I have yet to post. I really do need to do something about this lazy streak I have in me.

Enjoy.

It's hot in the studio again, so it's NAKED RADIO NIGHT. I was so dizzy with sweat that I just blindly pulled most of the songs here. But just take a look at that playlist! Sometimes you just have to take a risk. One day I think I'll just show up with no plan at all and no music in hand, and grab music from the mysterious Radio Valencia record library. That should be a hoot...or a miserable failure. Either way I'll make it fun.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #274: Hey, Can You Turn Up the Vocals?
Ever want to tell the sound guy at a show how to do his job? Sound engineer John Karr guested on September 12th, and you'll have to excuse us both, but when two absolute music geeks get together, there's not much that can stop the conversation. Almost each tune was presented by John with a story to go with it. This guy has a lot to say, and if you enjoy music as much as we do, you're going to eat it up.

John Karr is a well-established sound engineer, having worked clubs for over 30 years, and been the man at the controls in the studio for about the same length of time. If you've been to the Great American Music Hall then you have probably heard his mix. Check out his site here for Ear Relevant Recording, and if you are in a band then you MUST hire this man!

John has worked with The Mermen, Big City Orchestra, Brian Jonestown Massacre, George Clinton, Primus, Peaches, Mike Patton, Eric McFadden...you name it, he's probably worked it.

My only regret is how long it took me to get this show up for you to listen to.

What this Hell is this Labor Day thingy all about anyway? Did you have the day off? Thank the Union. Did you have to work? Then join a union! It's all about the worker on tonight's show...mostly. For two minutes it's about Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, but mostly it's about the worker. And you know it should always be about the worker, right? Why do so many people vote against their own interests? It boggles the mind.

Are you getting educated about the upcoming election? It's not just about Hil and the Donald. There are so many propositions on the Cali ballot that it makes my head spin. Legalize Weed? Ban the death penalty? You better get reading, kids. And please be sure to vote this November. I'll be talking up the election during my last show in October to get you all ready for it.

Until then, enjoy this deep dish of labor delights from yours truly, Hell's Kitchen Radio, and Radio Valencia.

See you on the radio.

Well 2016 continues to be a shit show when it comes to amazing entertainers who have influenced so many lives. This week we say goodbye to the great Gene Wilder, star of so many great movies from my childhood; and recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who was at the controls of thousands of legendary jazz recording sessions, that it's fair to say the his ear was as important as the musicians and the producer in creating some of the most memorable tunes from the 1950s up until just a few short months ago. Both we be missed, but luckily for all of us we have more than enough material to enjoy them for decades to come!

Some nights the music plays the band. That would be this night. What a ton of fun this show was to host. Lots of new music and hidden gems.

For those of you looking for something fun to do this week, I have two shows I recommend.

Thursday night at the Fillmore is my favorite Japanese drone, ambient, metal band Boris! They are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their breakout record PINK! Earth is opening. Come to this show! Bring ear plugs and a chest protector. Trust me.

Friday night at the Uptown in Oakland is a fundraiser for Sean and Monique Lyons, whom many of us know from the local music scene. They moved to Louisiana a year ago only to have a house fire, with no insurance coverage, the day after their one year wedding anniversary. We love the Lyons' and want to help them with all we can, so on this night we gather on their behalf. Tickets and donations at the door night of show. Featuring performances by MoFu!, Maximum Bob, Kehoe International, CACA and MCM and the Monster. Master of ceremonies Sean Boyles.

Caca is some of the best local SF musicians covering FRANK ZAPPA!!! You do not want to miss this show as well.

So many wonderful opportunities to see live local music. Get out and get yours.

Enjoy.

We spoke for the two hours about suicide, why it's such a taboo to speak about, how friends and family can support their loved ones, what to say, and what not to say to someone who is contemplating suicide, and a lot of music from people who have committed suicide, or from those who have lost someone to it.

Though the topic is a heavy one, Delynn's soft and loving heart filled the two hours information as well as humor. The more we know, the more we can save.

Delynn has a gofundme page for her campaign bringing suicide awareness to the masses. Please visit the page and consider giving. And share the link far and wide. It could save a life.

A Season in Hell
Hell's Kitchen Radio #269: Eagle Wing Palace of the Queen Chinee
My musical tastes are anything but conventional, and I think that should be the norm. I was raised by a father who loved Chicago blues, and was also around two older sisters who were into the popular rock of the 70s. My first favorite band was KISS, followed by the Beatles a few years later, and then Led Zeppelin. I've written at length about my introduction to the Grateful Dead, and my subsequent love affair with them. My 25+ years in non-commercial radio has introduced me to too many genres to count, and it's just as common to hear me play the Melvins on my show as it is James Brown.

For my most recent show I wanted to pay homage to the musician who made the deepest impact on my musical soul: Jerry Garcia. I don't love every one of his songs, and I cannot stand his voice after 1982. It was the deep spiritual, true American message that most resonates with me. It's because of Jerry's love of American musical history that encouraged me to dig deeper than what was commonly offered up on mainstream radio. I think it's safe to say Jerry Garcia is one of the main reasons I chose a life of left-of-the-dial radio.

Tonight's selection runs from early raw-Dead, to some screaming jams. Take a dive and enjoy the ride.

Enjoy.

August 9th is the 21st anniversary of the passing of Jerry Garcia. I wrote the following on my Facebook page earlier today:

I was waking up listening to Ann Arbor on KFJC when I heard that Jerry had passed. Actually I hit the snooze button, but something in her tone that I briefly heard made me turn the radio right back on. Sad doesn't put it quite right. I was full of anguish for the next number of days. I knew it would eventually happen, I just didn't think it would happen so soon. I called my friends Nichole and Zion to see how they were faring. I think it hit us all like a ton of bricks. Zion's mother came to town a few days later and we all went to the Jerry memorial in GG Park. She told us some amazing stories of touring. She told us she had never been to a Grateful Dead concert before and wanted to go to the middle of the crowd, which I know made Zion nervous.
About 30 or so minutes into it a tall, lumbering hippy came through the crowd and walked right up to us. He looked at Zion's mother and said in his sprite southern accent "Donna Jean?! Why, I haven't seen you in a coons age." He then looked at Zion, and said "why you're the spittin' image of your old man.", which he is. They spoke for a while and then he (his name is Sunshine) said so long, and walked off. At that moment people around us started to kindly say hello to Donna and show their love. If there was ever a bitter-sweet day, it was that one.
That moment reminded me that even without Jerry physically being present anymore, he doesn't need to be for all of us to still feel his presence and what he and his musical message means to all of us who took the time to listen and embrace it. To mourn his passing, even after 21 years, is to fail to see that as long as we sing his songs, then we still sing his praises.
I don't know what happens to us when we die, but I do know that as long as I live I'll continue to enjoy what Jerry brought to my life, with a smile on my face, the same as when Sunshine saw Donna and Zion as he tripped his way through the fields. Take pleasure in what you have now, and share the love as you go.

There are a few great Grateful Dead-related events happening in San Francisco this weekend. I hope you can make them all.

Sunday August 14 - 11AM-6PM - 14th Annual Jerry Day @ Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park
From the website: Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event that celebrates one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time and San Francisco native son – Jerry Garcia. This event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia as we celebrate his legacy, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and recognize his childhood roots from the Excelsior District of San Francisco. By uniting the diverse communities of San Francisco through Jerry’s music, we are creating something extraordinary for Jerry’s childhood neighborhood – the Excelsior District, McLaren Park, and the City and County of San Francisco.

I sure hope to see you all at some or all of these upcoming events. Have a grateful week.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #268: Hell's Squad
Lauson and I had so much fun on the last Monday night. I think you can tell by the playlist, but mostly through the banter. We spoke a lot about her love of sloths. Lauson's songs are designated by "LH".

The second hour has a couple of tunes celebrating the birthday of the late, great local boy, Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 74 on this date, August 1st.

In celebration of the 14th annual Jerry Garcia day coming up this Sunday, August 14th at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park in SF, I will be spinning two hours of Jerry and Grateful Dead tonight on Radio Valencia. This coming Saturday night, August 13th, I'll be spinning six hours of live Dead, from 8PM-2AM at Doctor's Lounge, located at 4826 Mission Street in the Excelsior District of SF. Come on down and dance.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #267: Election Night Special

Hell's Kitchen Radio #267: Election Night Special
Back on the air after a month away. I don't care to take so much time away from the aural pleasures that radio brings, but it had to be done. I traveled with my wife and daughter up to the great Northwest Territories! By that I mean Vancouver, Seattle and Portland.

I won't share the clusterfuck we got into at SFO when they wouldn't let my 11 year old daughter fly without a passport. Needless to say, we made it to all of our destinations, albeit about $1000 less in our pockets than I would have liked. ugh

We spent two days wandering around the EMP in Seattle. If you travel to that great town, please do your self a favor and go there. If you're a music fan, and I know that you are, you won't regret it.

Voodoo donuts are overrated. There, I said it. Who the hell needs a Cap'n Crunch donut? Besides I live in San Francisco. We have Bob's. I do love me some Portland though. I will most likely retire there and start a radio station. HA!

On with the show.

The first hour pays homage to my late teens and early 20s. Spending time at the EMP inspired me to go back and listen to items on my shelf that may have collected a bit of dust.

The second hour is full of some tasty and rare surprises. A "new" Betty Davis LP issue of an oft-rumored Miles Davis-produced session was worth the wait. I have some new Melvins in there, as well as a number of live cuts from the likes of Tom Waits, Dave Bromberg, Allman Brothers.

I also blather on about the election, and croon about how much I love you.

Next Monday night, Little Lauson Hell makes an appearance. Tune in 8-10PM every Monday night!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #266: Sauce And A Little Hell
It's been WEEKS since I've hosted a show. Here's my most recent one, which featured both the wife (Saucy) and the daughter (Little Lauson Hell)! I think this is the first time I've had them both in the studio with me at the same time!!!

It's a family affair tonight! I've got the return of Little Lauson Hell and my dear bride, Saucy in the studio with me. Will we air dirty laundry live on the radio? Lauson and Saucy chose much of the music. It's a wee more poppy than you'll usually hear in the Kitchen. Don't let that stop you from enjoying it. And the banter is...woo hoo! Boy, do you get to learn about this family! Yowza!

Sorry it's taken so long to post this. I took a few weeks off, and traveled to the great Pacific Northwest. We tried to fly to Vancouver, but wouldn't you know it, them Canadiens say we need to have a passport for the little one to fly up there. So we flew to Seattle, drove to Vancouver, then drove back to Seattle, before ending our 9 days in Portland. Fabulousness was had by all!

I'll be back on Radio Valencia this coming Monday night at 8PM (PDST). Tune in.

Enjoy.

Here's another recent broadcast that didn't get posted. This is from June 20th. What a mix! Lots of new music and plenty of music that's new to you. And check out the SET OF THE WEEK!!!

This coming Monday night, Little Lauson Hell will be back in the studio with me. What will this 11 year old wonder pick to play? Your guess is as good as mine (but if she knows what's good for her, she'll stay away from that pop crap). Tune in this Monday at 8PM.

I actually have about six shows over the past six years that I have yet to post. What the hell is up with that?! I'll do my best to get to those soon enough, as long as you promise to actually check them out. Feel free to comment on any and all of my show posts too! And please share this with any of your music-loving friends.
